Ive been accepted to MIT, Amherst, Williams and Dartmouth.

Its easy to tell everyone Im choosing Dartmouth over Amherst and Williams, everyone agrees; but, it is very difficult to convince some people that Dartmouth is a better choice than MIT.

Can anyone help me with some ideas I could use?

Thanks,
Cherry

If you wanna have some semblance of a live: Dartmouth.

If you wanna risk having to kill yourself with a graphing calculator so your calc prof won't have to: MIT

Meltingsnow, my son is faced with the exact same dilemma. Tough call. We are going to CPW and Dimensions. Hopefully that will help. There really are no bad choices here. I imagine that the workload may be somewhat tougher at Dartmouth, but offset that with being in Boston, and it seems a wash. Please let us know your thoughts on this. Enjoy your success.

meltingsnow, my cousin is a beatiful,NORMAL girl who graduated from MIT 2 years ago, Econ major, and had a blast. Yes there are geeks, but it is also one of the US's top 25 party schools. You need to visit. And D sciences are no picnic...very hard from what I hear. Also, cousin said MIT was shockingly reasonable work-wise. GO VISIT---DO NOT PICK A SCHOOL BASED ON HERESAY AND STEREOTYPES!!!!!!!!!!

Ooops, what I actually meant to say was "the workload may be somewhat tougher at MIT" but I'll bet it's not that much tougher.

MIT and Dartmouth are very different, I dunno. As far as Dartmouth v Amherst/Williams, I agree with your well thought out position: Dartmouth all the way!

I loved Dartmouth when I visited, but since i want to major in engineering MIT seems like a better choice. I feel like I'm obligated to go to Dartmouth because I've loved it for so long and never considered MIT a realistic choice, but when I got into MIT everything got confusing. advice?

I am the biggest Dartmouth fan. It is seriously one of the most, if not THE, most tight-knit top school in the world. It is amazing a college can be so wonderful in so many ways.

That said, as an engineer here's the issue. Dartmouth (and most LACs) only gives out B.A.s in engineering, unlike tech schools that give a B.S. So Dartmouth has a "B.E" which takes another year and is sort of like a masters.

The truth is a great majority of engineers go into business, so if that is what you want Dartmouth works perfectly. If you really really want to be an engineer monitoring processes, then be aware you might need to spend a fifth year at Dartmouth.

Ok, this might not be the most impartial board to ask this question, but I AM seriously considering Amherst vs. Dartmouth (vs. Swarthmore (with maybe Middlebury or Georgetown thrown in for good measure)). So, if you wouldn't mind, why is Dartmouth such a better choice (All that directly comes to mind is the Ivy on the walls)?

Nickleby, I lost track of you in the frenzy---didn't know you got into D---CONGRATS!!! What appeals to me most about D is the D Plan and how they balance "being in the woods" by kicking you off for at least a year, requiring only 2-1/3 years in residence, with AWESOME off campus programs run by D faculty. I laid out a lan by which I can complete pre med requirements, major in cultural anthro, go to New Zealand (anthro), Argentina (Spanish culture/language) and Italy for Art History...and take a fall term off to get snowboard teacher certification in Austria. That is some education, if you ask me.

Nickleby - It is not necessarily a better choice - a similar choice in many ways, but a different choice and it has more to do with you than anything else. Hopefully, you will be able to narrow it down to two or three top schools and spend an overnight or weekend at each campus - check out the atmosphere, the classes and it will hopefully help. GOOD LUCK with the decision process but once you do make your choice, don't second guess too much.

Screw what other people think. Let 'em complain about you turning down MIT. Go where you want to go, not to the school with the highest SAT averages.

nickleby--i picked amherst over dartmouth and columbia and it was the best decision i've ever made. send me a message if you want to know specifics.
