Dartmouth or Colgate??

Just wondering if anyone here got into Dartmouth or Colgate and what their stats looked like. I know both are probably a reach for me, but I just wanted to know what it really takes to get in. Also, if anyone's gone there, how do you like it. Good experience, bad...?

Would applying early to either increase my chances or would it not really give me any edge?

Colgate and Dartmouth are in different leagues. Colgate is a match/safety for viable Dartmouth applicants. Dartmouth needs close to a 4.0/1460 is average SAT and excellent ECs. Colgate has a 3.6 average, 1350 SATs and less stellar ECs.

Thanks, maybe colgate's not such a reach for me. Still looking for experience stories from students.

I got into Colgate (match) and rejected from Dartmouth (reach).
In a nutshell,
21/320uw, ~10/320w
3.84uw, ~4.1w
9 APs/honors
30 ACT
SAT IIs: 630, 790, 570 - only Dartmouth required, so Colgate never saw
pretty strong ECs, not much leadership, decent essays/recs

What do you think a 30 ACT amounts to in SAT numbers?

1350ish, or 2000ish

Thanks. That's pretty much where I am. Can anyone suggest other choices in the NE that are on the same level/feel of Colgate? I'm going to go looking at campuses over the summer and just wanted to know if there's anything else I should check out.

You're lookin at schools I'm thinkin of, haha. colgate, bates, colby, bowdoin, middlebury. I think I'm visiting in late august.

How accurate do you think princetonreview is with their SAT/ACT means?

I'm not sure. But I hear that Princeton Review often overestimates your chances so I'm a little cautious about that. That's why I wanted to know the scores of real people who got in to get an idea. I would imagine they can't be too far off though.

Well i mean, princetonreview states that Brown's ACT mean is a 28, Darmouth's is a 30 along with Penn; so I mean, I just don't know.

At the schools you mention, most will have taken SATs rather than the ACT. Those numbers sound very low. Keep in mind that the students at or below the mean or average are typically hooked candidates.

Other schools like Dartmouth & Colgate: Middlebury, Bowdoin, Williams, Cornell, and surprisingly Bucknell. Look at Bates, Tufts, BC, Haverford, Kenyon, Lafayette and Trinity.

I went to Dartmouth, it was the most amazing experience I could imagine. I think most people feel as strongly about the place. I would say for Dartmouth strong ECs, a 1450+, and top 5% is pretty standard although clearly not required. Colgate is more like top 15%, 1350, and okay ECs. As zagat said, they are at entirely different levels.

Slipper, based on this year's acceptances, Colgate's acceptances for next year will be SAT minimum of 2100+ with very strong leadership qualities being key in the ECs. Also they probably won't look at GPA under 3.8 uw with class rank not being below top 10-12%. Dartmouth, Colgate, Bowdoin, Williams, Middlebury and Cornell attract the same kind of student and it's increasingly becoming a crapshoot for all of them. Know of students rejected by Colgate but accepted by Dartmouth and Cornell, BTW. Ditto accepted by Bowdoin and Middlebury, but WLed by Colgate and Williams. It all depends on what they're looking for in a particular year. Have heard that next year Dartmouth (Middlebury too?) wants to make up for a lack of URMs on campus and will stress diversity over other qualifications. If that's the case, Colgate, Bowdoin and Williams will benefit. Of course, that's a year off and things could change by then.

Dartmouth has a pretty high number of URM and is much more diverse than any other New England LAC (in fact its more diverse than Brown, Cornell, etc also!). As an interviewer Dartmouth I have never heard of a shift, its always had a focus on diversity.

Saying Colgate is on the level of Dartmouth is not true at all. In fact Dartmouth is much closer to Princeton than Dartmouth is to Colgate. Colgate lets in over 33% annually, Dartmouth is about 16%. Colgate is more like NYU, Colby, or Tufts. Dartmouth is like Columbia, Penn, Brown, Duke.

Colgate is a safe match to the same applicant for whom Dartmouth is a reach.

I wouldn't go so far as to say safe match. A match, yes. Safe...no.
