Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra

Does anyone know if Dartmouth is going to need a violist next year for the orchestra?

bummmppppppp

Haha, you bumped after 10 mins…

DSO is always looking for violists and cellists

It all depends on how good you are.

If I get into Dartmouth, I will definitely try out for a spot in the cello section. I have played the cello for 15 years, and I love it! ^_^

I think I am a decent violist. I’m in the Skidmore College Orchestra but I imagine DSO may be a little more difficult to get into. How much do you think this could increase my chances of admissions by? Hopefully I’ll see you there next fall pranam0!!

Oh, you’re a transfer? It definitely will help, but then again, it must be ridiculously difficult to transfer into an Ivy League. I wish you all the best pfips123! Hope we both can be in Hanover next fall! :)

Nope, not a transfer. I’m a senior in high school.

Oh nice! Then, definitely! Good luck!

Thanks a lot. Good luck to you too. I was just looking at your chance thread and your stats are amazing. They put me to shame haha

I don’t think being a string player is much of a plus in Ivy admissions, unfortunately. There are tons of top students who are also very good violinists, especially. As you know, orchestras always need more violists and cellists, though, and it is typically easier to get into ensembles if you play one of those instruments. If you want your playing to be evaluated for admissions, I assume you are sending an arts supplement for evaluation? Otherwise it will simply be viewed as part of your EC package.

Yes, I have submitted the arts supplement for viola.

Same here. I submitted mine for flute. I don’t think it should be too big of an issue to get in for flute, if I prepare well. Then again, there are only 3 or 4 flutists they take compared to the many violas accepted. Play well and you’ll have a shot.

haha thanks. that’s the plan. however I have to be accepted first which is the real problem.

I don’t play, but a few of my friends do.

They’re not in need, perse, of a violist. However, the DSO would be more than happy to take you- if you pass their auditions. Don’t know how much of an advantage being a string player is going to be for you in admissions, but you never know.

Good luck!

Thanks. I hope I make it in. After playing viola for so long I couldn’t imagine just stopping.

Even if you don’t join the orchestra, you can join the string quartet program.

yeah that actually may be more appealing as I like playing in smaller groups. do you know if you have to be a music major or minor to do that?

I’m sure you do not have to be a music major or minor.
