Hey! I haven't had the opportunity to visit Dartmouth yet but I've certainly heard a lot about it. My only reservation concerns Dartmouth's location up in rural Hanover. I've seen Cornell and as much as I loved the university, I didn't like how it was in the middle of nowhere. Do you feel the same way up in Dartmouth. Even though the campus is undoubtedly beautiful (and I'm sure you can find stuff to do locally), do you ever find yourself feeling somewhat isolated? Thanks...

bump...anyone?

If you don't like rural, than yes, it is positively too rural. It is, however, one of the most beautiful colleges on the planet with pleanty to do. If college to you includes a city, major shopping, museaums and restaurants, you will be happier elsewhere. If you want a campus focus with tons of activities, a ski hill belonging just to the college, hiking, biking, incredible natural beauty and a very active social life, Dartmouth is the perfect college.

Thanks suze. I will definitely keep Dartmouth on my list and hopefully get a chance to visit it soon.

i definately prefered urban campus but i felt that dartmouth had its own buzz because it is in the middle of nowhere which is probably better than say columbia where everyone spreads out on the weekends

As a student who grew up in NYC, I can say that Dartmouth is not too rural to spend four years... but I don't think I could last another year some place so remote. I love it for college, but I'm ready for the city again. :)

I think a lot of people go into it feeling that the city will always be there for you to live in, work in, play in, but Hanover and Dartmouth won't always be a possibility.

So which city you think is not rural....?
My friend called me today. He has just been in the states for 2 weeks attending University of Minnesota at Twin Cities and tells me that big cityis very rural, like countryside...

Athena,

My D felt the same way grew up in NYC, knew that she would be returning after college and felt that she did want a nice change of pace. She really did not consider schools in NYC because she said she did not want to spend her entire educational career on the island of manhattan. She did grow up as one of those there's NYC and there's everywhere. She would most likely call anything outside of Manhattan rural).

I would have never though that she would be happy in rural NH but she loves it. For her it is a wonderful balance. I also believe that because it is rural that it adds to the wonderful sense of community at Dartmouth.

It depends on the city - I can assure you that New York is not rural feeling at all.

Speaking as someone who strongly dislikes cities, Dartmouth is a dream come true.

"She did grow up as one of those there's NYC and there's everywhere."

That's definitely how I grew up. :) I think it was in my blood.
And even so, I never considered any of the NYC schools (Columbia, NYU). I think Dartmouth is a great place for college. I just can't imagine living in such a quiet place forever!

Yeah!
City: any point in your life, but
Dartmouth: only once!

Agreed with William!

hey RunRinCT,

i agree with athena..i grew up in nyc also, and i don't think dmouth is too rural for school. there's plenty to do, and it's a great change of pace from the city. best location for a college i think. plus, everyone in town is really nice.

please come visit! you'll fall in love with the place =)

Hey Tracey is that you? ;)
(it's Amanda)

YUP!! it's me =)

Yes, it is. I feel I have to reply to this:

As for being one of the most beautiful colleges on the planet -- that's certainly a valid prerogative. But "plenty to do" is stretching it...

I disagree. I've never lacked something to do.

You really have to visit Dartmouth to know if it is right for you. It is one of those schools that I would STRONGLY advise visiting before making a committment to going there.

It is not for everyone.
