so i have four choices - Duke, Dartmouth, Emory and Swarthmore (and my state school)

so far i crossed emory off the list (financial reasons) and swarthmore (fit reasons)

im torn between duke n dartmouth help!!! what would you choose and why? i have a lot of info on both schools and obviously since im in the dartmouth forum im leaning toward it but im still not sure. duke is much closer to home though (im in florida)

ps - the financial aid package from dartmouth is significantly better (10k more) but i am sending appeals to both schools.

You haven’t said anything about yourself or your interests, so we have no way of giving you advice other than making superficial generalizations about both schools.

So, to be superficial:
If Dartmouth>Duke. (true)
and if Dartmouth costs less than Duke (true)
then you should go to Dartmouth.

A number of people I know had to decide between Dartmouth and Duke (as well as some other schools) but ultimately chose Dartmouth. I was down to the two even into mid-May because I just couldn’t decide but chose Dartmouth. I visited the two campuses, found out as much information as I could and talked to friends and random students who went to either of the colleges. I will just say, although what people wrote on collegeconfidential was helpful, there are thousands more who never post or hear about this website. I would look into what you’re interested in and as the poster above me said, what you’re looking to get out of your college experience.

the two are different. I know 4 2012 guys, 3 from Miami and 1 from Jupiter, and they are loving Dartmouth. A buch of the Florida guys and their new found friends enjoy boarding in Vt and at Dartmouth’s ski resort. They also like fishing and jumping into the Ct. river. In other words, there is more outdoor activities at Dartmouth than Duke, but a large margin.

Considering that you’re from Florida, I’d go to Duke. Dartmouth has really harsh winters and unless you’re from the north, you may have a hard time adapting.

in talking with the guys from Florida, their attitude is that they were going to college and wanted somewhere different but also enjoyable-- they chose Dartmouth. I know at least one had a Duke choice and chose Dartmouth because of all the outdoor stuff offered and just the overall environment. Also, the Dorms they were offered at Dartmouth were much nicer-- the East campus at Duke needs to be improved. If you have a choice of both, I don’t really see a debate unless you feel like going to UNC all the time. There is more to do at Dartmouth and the Dartmouth Coach can take you to Boston anytime you want, which is certainly a better option than any bus from Duke- I mean Dave Matthews is at Fenway and all the guys at Dartmouth are going in May.

I personally chose Dartmouth over Duke. I liked the more tightknit community, the LAC-like academics, Sophomore Summer, the amazing study abroad, the crazy big weekends, the traditions, etc. Dartmouth is more intimate and community driven and that’s what I was looking for.

This data is a few years old, but it suggests that in a head-to-head comparison (Dartmouth vs. Duke), students chose Dartmouth 70% percent of the time.

Whoa man, that must have been some pretty trippy ****.

Anyways, I CANNOT BELIEVE you would ever consider being a Dook fan. Sir, I do not think you understand the gravity of your situation. Save yourself now, and go to Dartmouth.

Uh who cares who picked what over who? It’s all about what fits you the best. That data is flawed and old so I wouldn’t put any stock into that.

The undergraduate education at Dartmouth isn’t clearly better than Duke’s at all. The difference is honestly negligible. Duke has incredible study abroad opportunities as well and a great community feel. I highly doubt Dartmouth is a more intimate place than Duke. It is smaller but the basketball team here unites students like nothing Dartmouth has.

Check out DukeEngage.[DukeEngage | Home](http://dukeengage.duke.edu/) It’s a one-of-a-kind program that is not offered at any other school including places like HYP. So, anyone who tells you Dartmouth offers more undergraduate opportunities than Duke is not well-informed.

Do you prefer snow or sunshine? A semblance of a college town with a true on in close proximity or the great outdoors?

I think that Duke will be the better fit for you since you’re from Florida as well.

^I have spent a lot of time at both Duke and Dartmouth. Dartmouth is a much more intimate place, principally because Hanover (ranked as top 1 or 2 places to live in the US) is entwined with the campus. Dartmouth is a Norman Rockwell New England Village. Duke is not and, although Duke has a nice campus, it isn’t intimate or entwined around a nice town or any town.

The one thing I hear over and over from Duke advocates is that we at Dartmouth simply dont have the same level of athletics to bring us together. But trust me, it is so much more fun to go to a sports game, sit front row, and cheer on your best friends than it is to sit in the nosebleed section and watch other people play who are only loosely associated with your school.
