Your views....Thanks

its hard to compare them, they're two completely different schools which match different needs and interests

heres a simplistic thought

if you know what u want to be in life ...go to mit
if you dont know what u want to be in life...go dartmouth

huh? what do you mean? :D

Yeah-I can't agree with isacc. I don't think going to MIT would limit your future options.

I don't agree with isacc either. Whether or not you know what you want to be or to do does not seem relevant in choosing Dartmouth or MIT.

I love dartmouth....that ends it for me ;)

what i was saying there are so many stories of students at dartmouth
who go in open minded about their futures...they are not set on
engineering or phd degree in math..they taste a class in every
field.. ...they are blown away by a prof in a field
they never thought of and continue down a new path..
they go overseas and come home fluent in a language..they try
sports they never thought they would experience ..example skiing
as a pe class for floridians..they learn to love nature..hiking,climbing
they experience theater and blown away by the singing groups

so has been stated many times on these boards for a broad minded education and life experience dartmouth is your school

dartmouth doesn't have to put up nets during finals to stop its students jumping off the roof.

Though admittedly, i really wanted to get into mit (even if i didnt end up going there)

just to show off? :D

when my s 08 and i took a very lively cornell tour
someoune asked the vivacious tour guide about
the reputation cornell had for suicides...she paused
and told us her old roommate was a statistic
and boy did that change the mood of that tour group

re dartmouth my s only said he felt any competition with fellow students
when the interviews came about for internships soph summer and fall of
juinior year..
so for the first two years of bookwork he enjoyed the freedom to study hard and not for edging out a classmate

isacc, how hard did your son have to work at dartmouth to maintain a respectable gpa (3.5 plus)? I'm sort of worried because dartmouth doesnt seem to be as easy as other ivies (i'm interested in professional school, so gpa is a big deal for me).

taking 3 courses means for example
you will have 2 courses mwf
and 1 course on t and th
(of course you choose any variation)

so you will be amazed how much time you will have within each day for
studying and for sports and for frats etc.

the partying (to your folks) will seem excessive but the majority do know
to party hard and study hard..

the quarter system does mean the first fall goes faster than your use
to..so just remember to keep up everyday and youll stay on top of it

one more thing the study days at the end of the quater of course are a
huge help..3 or 4 days of no class just study..

maybe you should wait until you get letters from both schools before making such a daunting decision
