My S is narrowing his choices down to these two; any thoughts on differences in premed, community spirit, housing?

i'm in the same boat, also premed...

im no expert, but from what ive read stanford's med school needs work...

in addition. im a junior and talking to my guidance counselor about stanford..she said that it was a very competitive environment, given the high asian class percentage. dartmouth on the other hand seems to be much more relaxed about competition, but students still work hard.

any dartmouth/stanford student alumns want to confirm that?

they are almost the same in school spirit, however i think Stanford might be a better pre-med school than Dartmouth (Dartmouth is great too) b/c Stanford is a bigger school in Cali with more opportunities for research etc.
Although i love Dartmouth, I must say Stanford it the better school for your S :D
gl, congrads to him

Stanford is a better school for sure :)

competition in the premed track (and the concentration of asians in that field) is unavoidable no matter where you go. the thing about D is that many folks end up drpping premed. (1) because it's freakin tough and (2) because of Dartmouth's liberal arts focus, many realize that their hearts lie somewhere other than medicine.

I liked the friendliness and community atmosphere at Dartmouth more when I visited last year. Additionally, (of course there are exceptions), I always had the sneaking suspicion that Stanford kids were the geeky kids in high school who are desperately trying to play it down in college and be all mellow, hippie surfer-casual.

Can't beat the weather though. This winter in Hanover, to be frank, sucked.

I'm not going to deny that people at Stanford are geeky attempted mellow, hippie surfer-casual, but I would have taken that in a heartbeat over the crunchy upper-middle class outspoken hippie-wannabe passive-agressive atmosphere at Dartmouth. Pre-med at both schools are good, but I have to concur with Newbyreborn that more opportunities will exist for a pre-med Stanford grad. And of course, there's no avoiding the issue of weather.

Stanford Is Million Times Better In Education, Prestige And Type Of Students. Dartmouth Yeck!
