I have to choose ONE of them to apply to. In terms of education, reputation, weather, location, and social life, how do these schools differ? I want to major in neuroscience so which one would be better. I appreciate all the complete answers. THANK U!

What is driving your need to choose only one?

All three have excellent reputations. Emory and Vanderbilt are mid-sized, urban, southern universities. Dartmouth is a small, undergraduate-focused university located in a small town in northern New England. So geographically, Dartmouth stands apart from the other two. Winters in northern New England can be rather long, cold, damp, dark, and snowy. Dartmouth compensates for that with beautiful surroundings and good opportunities for outdoor recreation. Dartmouth also is even more selective than the other two.

It is very hard to evaluate and differentiate the quality of individual departments at the undergraduate level. Most department rankings are for graduate programs; they tend to focus on research output, which is not necessarily one of the most important factors for undergraduates. College Confidential has had several threads on undergraduate neuroscience programs. Examples:

(I don’t think these discussions will tell you which of your three is better for neuroscience … but maybe you’ll get some insights into what to consider).

They all have world class medical centers, which seems like a plus for neuroscience. They differ in difficulty of admission with Dartmouth being the hardest and Emory being easiest. See:

If you can only apply to one then pick Emory since the chance of getting in is best. Be sure to “show interest” since they consider that. Emory is also near the CDC (Centers for Disease Control.). Emory does not have a football team. That kept my son from applying.

vanderbilt would be first on my list.
the only flaw with vanderbilt (IMO) is it has a super sized % of greeks. if you like that then no worries.

I know Vandebilt has something like 33% of men and 50% of women in Greeks. Does this count as super sized? I know the other schools have Greeks too, but don’t know the numbers. Vandebilt’s Greeks aren’t really residential, even though a lot of students participate.
