Data breach at cornell

Seriously?

Cornell University - CUinfo - June 2009 Data Theft - Frequently Asked Questions

i am one of 45k :(

and is it just me or was this mostly minorities who were affected?

Whee. Thank goodness it wasn’t me.

I bet someone left a laptop sitting around… And someone gonna lose their job.

Should I be placing fraud alerts on all of my family members’ accounts now? I’ve never even thought about personal data theft, so I’m not clear on what we are supposed to do about this?

Hooray no new cmail :)

It wasn’t minorities. Both my daughter and one of her apartment mates got letters, and neither is a member of a minority group. (We don’t know yet whether their third apartment mate, who is a member of a minority group, got a letter.)

My husband, who has been in similar situations, says to wait for the letter from Cornell and do what it says. He also says this sort of thing isn’t uncommon; it has happened to him four times in recent years.

I don’t think it’s minorities either, I got an email. on Marian’s recommendation there I will be sure to do whatever the letter recommends. this is kind of unwanted news. :(

We got the email also, already called the credit bureau to put the fraud alert on. It is unclear what personal information was on file.

Happened to me as well…I’m an alum and not a minority.

Same thing happened to my mother…except someone at her alma mater put her SS # on the envelope of her alumni mailing.

Actually…a question that might seem silly. I’m in the middle of applying for a loan for school this fall. If I put a fraud alert out, will this affect the processing of my loan?

hurray for me. im one of the 45000!!

Welcome to the club!

Has anyone ever had their identity stolen from this happening?

woooooo me too!

although, really, it’s no laughing matter. such a frustrating thing to have to deal with. =</p>

Ugh, me too. (Not a minority, btw). That website makes it seem like it was all one guy’s fault.

with 45000 people affected, it obviously affected ALL students, faculty, and many alum REGARDLESS of race. cornell didnt “pick and choose” whose SSNs were stolen.

it didn’t affect the internationals i know, though. even ones with SS numbers.

Yeah there wasn’t an indication that it only affected minorities.

I’m an international, as is my friend and neither of us got emails.

I’m in too :(

sorry i made the race comment before realizing it was 45k students affected.
