Data retrieval and FAFSA

Has anyone tried the data retrieval of their federal tax return forms from the IRS when submitting their FAFSA?

I went back to update our FAFSA after our taxes were filed and it was so complicated that I thought I would use the data retrieval system instead. Now I can't seem to get out of the correction section, or even start over.

Anyone have any luck with this?

Not quite sure what you mean … you can’t seem to get out of the correction section?

Okay, so did you click on Make Corrections? Then did you request the IRS direct tax transfer? It will ask for the parent PIN, I believe, in order to transfer the parent tax info. Once it transfers, you should be able to save it & then submit it. You will need to sign the FAFSA with both the student PIN and a parent PIN in order to successfully submit.

P.S. How long has it been since your electronic tax filing was accepted? Maybe you tried to transfer before the return was available (it can take a couple weeks).

Yes, I clicked on Make Corrections. There is no link anywhere that I can find that says IRS direct tax transfer. Maybe the return is not available yet? It has been about three weeks since we filed.

If you filed originally with “will file,” you should now click on “already filed.” When you do that, the link should pop up underneath that.

Thanks. I can’t get to the screen which shows the “will file” or “already filed.” I seem to be stuck on the page which takes me back to the beginning to do corrections. That was my original intent, just plug in the new year’s numbers, until it got too complicated for me.
When I go to the login page, I am only really given an option to make corrections to an already completed FAFSA.

Okay, I am looking at the demo site right now. I logged in, then said that I wanted to make corrections. When I got into the FAFSA, I clicked Next on the bottom of the explanation page & was taken to the FAFSA. I clicked on Financial Information, which took me directly to the parent tax info section. The info re: the IRS data link is right there … not even a pop-up, like I had thought … it’s just right there. Try it now & maybe I can walk you through it.

Are you getting tripped up on the first page that comes up? Just click next at the bottom to get to the FAFSA!

kelsmom-
I’m not quite sure what I did right this time (I kept going back and forth with your info) and there was the link! Oh, happy day! Thank you very much!

Yea!!! Glad I could help.
