Our accountant filed both our income tax return (the parents) and our son's return on the same date and they were both accepted by IRS. Both returns required payment and were mailed (separately) on the same date, received by IRS on the same date and both cashed/cleared on the same date. Within two weeks, we were able to use the Data Retrieval Tool for our income tax return (a lengthy and more complicated 1040) but our son's return (a simple 1040) has not been processed yet and it's been a full three weeks. It's the only thing holding up submitting his corrected FAFSA since ideally we would like to use the DTR for his as well. Any one have any ideas as to why it's taking so long to process especially when ours was done so quickly. It doesn't show up in the tax transcript screen either. Note: They were both filed and accepted on March 21, 2014.

Sorry I don’t have any answers - all I can tell you is that you’re not alone. Our family filed our returns in early February, my husband and I were able to use the Data Retrieval Tool 2-3 weeks later, and my student son is still unable to use either the Data Retrieval Tool or order tax transcripts even though the IRS took money out of his bank account two days after he e-filed. We’re required to provide verification paperwork, and when we submit that to the college we’ll include a letter explaining the delays we’re facing.

Good luck with this, and I hope to start reading that people are starting to have success.

Thanks for your reply . . . it does make me feel a little better to know that others are experiencing this same problem. Although it would be nice if the IRS would “just do their job”. Maybe the students returns are so easy that they put them on the bottom of the pile (lol). Like you, we are also required to fill out verification paperwork, so that was a good tip about explaining the delay when you submit to the college.
