Data to help find reach, match, safety

Lots of questions on this site about finding reach, match, safety. Here is some data that might help. From IPEDS. Sorted by grad rate. Some schools don’t report test scores but you can interpolate based on grad rate because grad rate is highly correlated with SAT. Hope this helps. I’ll post the next 100 schools later.

grad rate, “control” of college (public/private), state, avg net price for middle income, avg net price for upper middle income, SAT CR 25th, SAT CR 75th, SAT math 25th, SAT math 75th, ACT comp 25th, ACT comp 75th

What do the numbers in columns 2 and 4 mean (immediately before/after the state abbreviations)?
They don’t seem to represent “control” of college (public/private) and avg net price for middle income.

What are the ranges (or means) for “middle income” and “upper middle income”?
The price numbers seem to be missing for many rows.

If the purpose of this list is to help identify reach/match/safeties, then in my opinion the graduation rate may not be the most appropriate sorting key. Of the fields you’ve included, the test scores may be better indicators. For example, Davidson does not seem to be more selective than Caltech or Stanford; BC and MIT are not equally selective.

Thanks for getting this started though. It takes some work.

Agreed ^. Many engineering schools have lower graduation rates in 4 years because of co-ops.

If I had to choose the most appropriate sorting key from only the fields available here, I think it would be the 75th percentile SAT-M, with the 75th percentile SAT-CR as secondary. Most of the real crap shoot schools are the ones with 800 (or close to it) in at least one of those fields.

Yeah. And let’s not forget the strengths of ecs recs and essays. Hard to handicap that. Using sat math score is not a great measure. Especially for many LACs and test optional like bowdoin and u Chicago. And there are plenty of genius super pointy math wizs who breeze into MIT and wouldn’t get into many schools looking for slightly different overall strengths. Including my d best friend. Shut out at all the Ivy’s and mit was a yes.

The numbers in column 2 are Carnegie Classifications. Sorry I didn’t explain properly.
15 Doctoral Universities: Highest Research Activity

16 Doctoral Universities: Higher Research Activity

17 Doctoral Universities: Moderate Research Activity

18 Master’s Colleges & Universities: Larger Programs

19 Master’s Colleges & Universities: Medium Programs

20 Master’s Colleges & Universities: Small Programs

21 Baccalaureate Colleges: Arts & Sciences Focus

22 Baccalaureate Colleges: Diverse Fields

The numbers in column 4 are institutional control:
1 Public

2 Private not-for-profit

3 Private for-profit

Middle income range is 48K-75K per year. Upper middle income range is 75K-110K per year.

The grad rates are after 6 years, not 4. ^ years is the US Department of Education standard for 4-year programs and it captures the vast majority of grads from co-op programs.

I sorted by grad rate because some schools don’t report SAT scores. Not sure what they are trying to hide.
Schools are required by law to report grad rate which is very highly correlated with SAT scores. I suggest you simply interpolate the SAT scores for schools that don’t report SATs. Their SATs are very probably somewhere in between the schools above and below in my list.

Average net price is the average cost after financial gift aid.

Average net price is missing for public colleges. It is available from IPEDS. I just didn’t include it because I didn’t think price was as critical for the publics.

Average net price for publics may not take into account in-state versus out-of-state differences, or blend them together to obscure what may be the average in-state net price and average out-of-state net price.

But for many students and parents, net price, even for in-state publics, is critical in their ability to afford the school.

However, the best way to assess whether a college is in financial reach is generally its own net price calculator.

Don’t forget the high school academic record (some combination of courses, grades, GPA, rank), which is often the single most important aspect in many colleges’ frosh admissions criteria.

Good point.

I find that acceptance rate to be a much better metric for reach/match/safety.

I also think that some of the schools not reporting SAT’s are test optional so they don’t thing its important.

Not necessarily. The strength of the applicant pool matters. For example, CSUDH has a lower admission rate than UIUC, but it is not likely that UIUC is easier to get into than CSUDH.

Also, a school may have different admission rates for different buckets of applicants. UT Austin is an example: 100% admission rate for those who meet the automatic admission criteria, much lower for all others (overall admission rate of 39% is a blend of all of the buckets); there is also admission to majors.

There are always exceptions…

Some schools have higher acceptances rates because of the self selected but high quality pools. And adding 10000 unqualified applications to the pile based on common app and reputation does not make it more or less competitive. Your competition will be from the 25 to 75 stat range. You must be stand out from the others in that group unless you have advantages of legacy diversity or athletics

Here is the data for top 100 publics (by grad rate) with average net price included.
