Hello, so I am a National Merit Finalist with Northeastern as my first choice, and although I already received a Dean's Scholarship I really need the National Merit Full Tuition in order to attend. Does anyone know when NEU sends out the official document granting the scholarship? I have emailed my finalist letter to them, called, and everything, and all I have heard is that they adjust financial awards sometime in March or April. Does anyone know a more specific date?

Directly from the NEU website. There isn’t a specific date but it sounds like you’ll know within the next few weeks!

Congratulations on becoming a NM finalist! I encourage you to contact Northeastern’s NM scholarship coordinator (information is on the website) if you have any questions about the process, so that you don’t miss any specific deadlines for 2013. My son found her very helpful last year when he had similar questions. FYI, here’s the timing he experienced in 2012: he applied RD, was accepted February 21 with a Dean’s scholarship, sent the paperwork naming Northeastern as his first choice to NMSC in early April, and received the formal letter awarding the National Merit scholarship (which replaced the Dean’s scholarship) on April 17, after NMSC confirmed his choice to Northeastern. Once you are certain you will attend Northeastern, you must notify NMSC of your choice. Although my son sent a copy of his NM award certificate to Northeastern, the trigger for the scholarship last year was the formal notification to NMSC that he had selected Northeastern.

My son’s Northeastern Counselor said that once the NMSC sends a list of NMFs to Northeastern that has his name on it, his Financial Aid will be adjusted and he will be invited to the Honors program. NMSC has that they send their first list of names to colleges on March 1st this year. My son applied EA. I’m not sure if there is any delay in processing if you are a RD applicant. The wording appears to say they adjust EA students first and RD students a little later.

Yeah I just found out that NMSC sends out the list March 1, and Northeastern says they take 5-8 business days processing and checking for admission before adjusting the scholarships and contacting students. So I suppose Early Action admits should be hearing any day now.

I agree. My son has been now added as a Honors Student and they have asked for a couple forms from us so after that his financial aid should be adjusted and finalized.

Sounds promising, I guess let us know when you here for sure!

My son’s information online has been updated and shows National Merit Scholarship!

Will Northeastern send scholarship awards to Early Action NMFs if they are still listed as Undecided with NMSC? Or, must the EA NMF first select Northeastern? We’ve heard at least two replies to these questions - one yes, one no, with wide variations in dates. Student is very reluctant to name any school at this point, without a number from Northeastern. Thanks.

see above from allshewrote - you must select Northeastern as the first step to getting the scholarship

Our student asked twice if she had to first select Northeastern. One source said yes, by 3/1 for EA NMFs. Two other campus sources said no, can remain undecided. It’s been confusing.

From Northeastern’s website:

“Scholarship recipients must be U.S. citizens or documented permanent residents, admitted to Northeastern and should designate us as your college choice to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation by April 13. We will award our first group of scholarships in early March to students who were admitted Early Action.”

It appears that Northeastern’s deadline is April 13.

NMSC’s deadline reads as not until May 31st.

I have Northeastern selected as my first choice, do I still have to contact the school and let them know, or will NMSC take care of it for me? In other words, since I’m a finalist, and NEU is selected as my first choice, is there ANYTHING else I must do to ensure i receive the scholarship?

There is no way I’m going to let a silly mistake ruin my chances.

If you are an Early Action accepted student and notified NMSC that Northeastern was your First Choice before March 1st, there is chance that they may have already updated your award. You should log in to your online Neu Portal and see whats there.

If not, NMSC does send updated lists every couple of weeks to National Merit but to be safe, you should copy your National Merit Certificate send it to:

Thank you, Bethorama! I applied RD, but I will fax them my certificate.
