Dates in APUSH?

How important is it to know them? I can't imagine a multiple choice question asking, "What major battle occurred on this date?" or whatever. But is it helpful for essays? Do you get "outside knowledge" points on your DBQ if you can include dates?

remembering general time periods is much more important. most questions will ask about the progressive era, or the 1920s, etc

Yes, general time periods. But I do remember one question on the Nov. SAT II (not AP, but probably very similar) that was like "Which of the following did NOT occur in 1967?" and there were a bunch of things.

Meh, the SAT II has really obscure questions. I remember when I took the SAT II U.S. History exam last January, there was one question on Ralph Nader. Yeah, Ralph Nader. Talk about obscure.

Exact dates are not necessary. As long as you know the general time period. However, the dates become MUCH more useful if you know the exact year.
