dates

I see on the Tulane website that there is a orientation weekend starting Aug 27th. The details are not yet posted. When do freshman arrive? I think I should be booking tickets and hotels. I would guess we should arrive a day or two previous to buy all the stuff that we don't cart across the country. Also how long do parents hang around. Is there any orientation activity for the parents or should we plan on flying home on the 27th or 28th?
Also when is parents weekend?
Are any of your kids e-mailing possible roommates or just going to go with the luck of the draw?
Thanks

mom60 - I did sleuth around and find the date and schedule info for Orientation. If this link doesn't work (it is a pdf), post again and I'll try another method.

There are parent activities scheduled through Sunday evening 8/28 ending with a 6:45-8:45 "Dinner Hour and Family Farewell (on your own)". So we are planning to fly out Mon. am. We have made hotel res. arriving on 8/25 evening, so I (we?) can shop on Friday 8/26. Everything, including move-in, appears to start for Freshmen on Saturday.

Parents Weekend is Sept. 30. I had no trouble making Orientation hotel res (made a couple weeks ago), but did find that Parents Wknd was already booked at some hotels.

Haven't started with the air res yet (DH's job).

S is choosing luck-of-draw re roommates (did fill out the (required?) qx re sleeping habits, guest tolerance, neatness etc.) Mystifying to me, as I would want to do the on-line meet and match thing. He specified Butler (Honors), then stayed there over Eng. Scholar Day and seems pleased and does not want to try and influence who roommate will be. Assume/hope he will get Butler, as I've heard it has not been over-requested in past.

Hope this helps. Looking forward to both trips.

Room reservations for orientation are not hard to find and not expensive as most conventions avoid NO in August. Not the case in fall when parents weekend arrives. I can't remember what convention was in town last year during parents weekend, but rooms were scarce and expensive. Since our son decided he wanted us to come at the last minute, we ended up in Metairie. Not a bad drive at all.

Son used the roommate finder and had very good luck. His roommate had very compatible habits.

Do become familiar with the airline fares to and from New Orleans for short notice fares. Last year when Ivan rolled in, there was little time for making reservations. If Southwest flies to your local airport, they are easy to book online with and didn't up their fares after the evacuation was announced. If they don't, you might check airfares to nearby airports as well. Hopefully this year the campus won't close for a hurricane. My son will have his car there this year and will not leave without filling the seats. Tulane encourages all students with cars to do the same, so your sons and daughters may find a ride out with someone. Tulane bused students with no place to go to Jackson State University where they were graciously housed for a couple of days. When we got the letter about having a plan, we decided to fly him home in the event of a storm and things worked out as planned. Please do take your letter seriously and devise a plan.

jmmm and alongfortheride- thank you both. D has a friend who will be a senior at Tulane and I think she had to evacuate more then once.
I will get on the hotel reservations.

Another thanks from me, jmmom and along.
I especially appreciated that link to the schedule. Thanks to this board, I already booked my reservations for move-in and Parent's Weekend. I also had problems getting the hotel I wanted for Parent Weekend.
I really appreciate the tips.

The problem with Parents Weekend was not just that the convetion season is in full swing (bunch of eye drs. last year), but Parents' weekend is also tied in with Homecoming and a that too draws a large crowd.

Also, for those coming some distance (as we did), we actually purscahed all of our son's dorm stuff and the Bed, Bath and Yeyond in our home town, and it was all packed and ready to be picked up in Metarie when we arrived.

This thread is bringing back good memories as the whole family flew to N.O. to move him in.

Good memories of move in day; that a funny one!! Climbing up the stairs to the 10th floor of Monroe about 5 times is not what I would call fun. I don't think I have ever been so wet in my life before other than swimming and showering! Remember I'm just an old out of shape mom.

I did enjoy setting up son's room as he had no desire to figure out where things should go. Dad got to set up the computer and printer while son did I don't remember what. I will say when we moved him off campus we had a bit more fun, but still not a barrel of monkeys :-)

Another in agreement about the memories, except our stairs were in Sharp. Also, I don't do well in the heat and was practically incapacitated by the August humidity. I recall sitting beside a local person who commented to me that I was lucky that it was not very hot that week. I nearly fell off my chair!

My son did the roommate search thing and it worked out well. It was nice to meet him and his mother. I'm sure the room never looked the same after we set them up and left! We did arrive a couple of days early to shop for items. It was nice to have some time together before orientation.

Thanks for the heads up about the hotel rooms for Parent's weekend.
