Hi my daughter applied as undecided for her major. Someone told her that she wont be able to transfer into Smeal if she is DUS. Last night she said she wants to switch from DUS to Smeal but I dont think that is a good idea. I have been reading up on it and it looks like she needs to take certain classes and once she meets the requirements she then can transfer in…is this true? And if so how hard is it to transfer into Smeal
In fact, she can ONLY switch to Smeal from DUS, so she is good staying in DUS. There are two ways to get into Smeal…Get accepted as a freshman in PRE-Smeal status and then apply for the major at the end of sophomore year after having completed all of the entry to major requirements, or apply from DUS and then apply for the major at the end of sophomore year after having completed all of the entry to major requirements. Either way, they take the exact same entry to major requirements. No one is “IN” a major at Penn State until after they complete the entry to major requirements
so if she is good standing and takes the required classes she can in fact get into Smeal at the end of soph year? I am not sure why she is thinking she cannot get in. Thanks for the reply
Yes, that’s correct. Just make sure she knows the entry to major classes and GPA she needs. What is her intended Smeal Major?
she isn’t sure yet. Possible economics but you never you know
Economics isn’t in Smeal. It’s in CLA (meaning the entrance to major requirements are different and often more flexible)… AND she can take Economics with the Schreyer Scholars and be Paterno Fellow Aspirants, which is awesome… Great education, topnotch professors and peers and more interactive classes typically leading to better grades…

Economics majors need to take the two introductory economics classes honors + English 137H/CAS138 their first year, have a 3.5, cumulative GPA and A- in economics to get into Schreyer and have the Fellow title as feshmen).
She can stay in DUS and decide at the end of freshman year. You CAN’T get into Smeal from a major other than DUS so it’s safer to stay DUS till she’s sure.
For Smeal as well as econ, she needs to take the two Econ classes, English, applied calculus (unless she got a 4-5 in calculus AB), Statistics, Foreign language…
