My daughter is enjoying her second semester at SU.Her 1st semester was challenging. She had to relearn her method of writing. Her honors English class stressed that they write in their own voice. Her writing skills and confidence improved by her 2nd semester. She enjoys the food, but like other university students tires of it occasionally. She prefers not to ever take a car since they do get snow there often...especially this year.Take a printer if you don't want to trek out in the inclement weather to use the schools printers. She used theirs with no problem the 1st semester. Her room is unbelievably great.3 to her dorm room which was a converted lounge. She loves it! Options are available to choose if you prefer a quieter dorm, which she did. Her friends all stay on campus...no complaints about students heading home on weekends.Great parents association that emails or mails you invitations to events ,I recently enjoyed an online M Luther Kings day memorial video event that took place at the school...made me feel connected to my daughter. She isn't a party girl so I never hear of any partying taking place on campus. The campus is beautiful..Similar to Lehigh or Lafayette.
The SU new science building is under construction.View it via their webcam video online.I love the current Science building...unique! Fabulous gym for running track, etc..nicest I've ever seen! Great teachers also...take the time to assist students even when class isn't in session.Emailing them for assistance is a plus for students! She is enthusiastic about her 2nd semester and is loving it! Her grades are fantastic also! She is a Biology major with hopes of becoming a dentist. She is excited about the great new upperclassmen dorms under construction..nice ones already used by students.Visit their website and schedule a sleep over visit! Enjoy your visit!

wow, you sound like an advertisement for the school!

Susquehanna has just come up on our radar and your description definitely makes me want to visit! Any recommendations for restaurants or hotels in town?

This is great to hear! Susquehanna is one of S's top choices, and he has been accepted! I think that it could be a great school for him.

What other schools did your daughter consider, linmau?

stradmom,
I just got home from a weekend visit to Selinsgrove and Susquehanna University. The Selinsgrove Inn is a lovely place to stay when visiting Susquehanna University. It is a 24 room inn located in downtown Selinsgrove very close to campus. Breakfast is included in the room price and the hot breakfast entries are home-made by their chef who will even use ingredients from her own garden. The rooms are spacious, the staff are all extremely friendly and helpful. If you google "Selinsgrove Inn" it will take you to their website.

BJs Steak and Rib House a few blocks from the Inn is the place to go for dinner or lunch. Make reservations so you don't have a long wait.

Hey, thanks joinville, that sounds lovely! I'm ready for a minibreak - maybe I'll go for a quick weekend without the kid!

stradmom,
That sounds like a good idea. My daughter loved the Selinsgrove Inn a bit too much as she has informed me that when we come to visit her next year (she will be a freshman) she will also stay with us at the Selinsgrove Inn.

My daughter has also been accepted and is seriously considering it (we will have to wait for all the fin aid packages to make a final decision!)
It's so good to know that there are so many positive things being said about SU. It seems like such a nice school, facilities, etc. My D's concern is its location ... will there be enough to do on/off campus?
Joinville... your daughter has already decided to attend in the fall? What made her decision?

My son and I just returned from visiting 5 schools in New York and Pennsylvania. Susquehanna was our favorite by far. Wonderful campus, friendly students, and a great running program! The coach spent a good bit of time with us. My son even got to do his workout on the track. Yes, that's an incredible track! The two glass walls make it seem like you're running outdoors. The new science building under construction is also impressive, and he would spend a lot of time in it if he goes pre-med as he's considering.

The school seems to have an energy that other places were missing. It seemed like SU is trying harder to attract students and keep them. Other schools seemed kind of tired, and their facilities looked dated. The buildings at SU are updated and well-maintained. It also seems like there are a lot of activities on campus to keep kids busy.

We stayed at the Hampton Inn down the road a little ways, and really enjoyed it because it has a nice indoor pool, hot tub, and free breakfast.

If my son doesn't go to the University of Texas, I think SU will be his preference. His running is the complicating factor - he would be about the fastest kid at SU, and the slowest at Texas.

With the exception of the new buildings, everything you describe was why my wife and I attended in the late 70's and early 80's. Susquehanna has true character and is a caring community.

Even the Selinsgrove Inn and BJ's Ribs stood. Now if I could only get as good a cheesesteak in Florida as we did there.

If you choose Susquehanna, I am sure you and your family will be happy for the experience.

Does anyone know how the theatre dept is at Susquehanna?

I don't have any direct insight into the theater department, but our tour guide was very involved in theater and she said that the quality of the theater program was one of the main reasons why she chose Susquehanna over other schools.
