Daughter concerned over school size...

She was accepted and will be bio major. BUT got some good FA $ at Providence and like the size and "feel" of that school better. Can anyone out there talk about how the school "feels" once you are there? Do you feel like a number? like it is a huge university and cut throat? I think she feels honored getting accepted. I want her to like the school and appreciate the value and offerings it has. Help!!! Need advice!

At Binghamton, I feel like anything but a number. I love how Residential Life structured the communities, because I genuinely feel at home amongst friends. In large lecture-style classes (like at any) University, it’s far less personal than a discussion-style class.

For example, in my Statistics course, the lecture session has 430 students. My Writing course has only 15 students. So in this respect, it really depends. Plus, as you move on to more specific and upper level courses, they tend to get much smaller.

A University like Binghamton offers a myriad of activities due to the large student population. We have over 200 student organizations, intramural sports and so much more!

I’m in four large lecture courses this semester and I feel nothing like a number. The key is getting to know the profs in large classes and joining clubs where you’ll find friendly faces to say hi to when you see them on campus. Unlike a smaller schoo, where participation is kinda forced on you, Bing is where you have to make the effort. If daughter has issues with that, then she should look at smaller schools.

Bing alum here and mom of HS Senior. I would trust your D’s gut feeling that she likes Providence better and send her there as long as you can swing it financially.

Binghamton is a great school number wise. It’s not huge but not tiny either. There are in fact large lectures and especially as a freshman bio major her first year or so will consist of mainly these for Bio but as she will become a sophomore, junior, etc, from what I’ve seen the classes get much smaller. Again, I had a class with 250 and have had one with 18. Even for my classes with about 40 kids this semester I have teachers who know every kid’s name in the class. Every school has big lecture for intro classes but teachers have office hours and are extremely helpful and friendly. They want to get to know you on and individual basis from what I’ve experienced.
