Daughter Having Surgery - need info

Hi All,

I come to this site every once in a while to read things of interest and to give information when I have any, but now I need your help. My daughter will soon have hip surgery, and though we want her to come home to the east coast for this, she wants to stay in Evanston. There is no way that she is going to go through this alone (which, as a 20-year-old, she thinks she'll be able to do), so I was wondering if anyone knows/has ideas about renting a small efficiency apartment for a short-term period so that I can take care of my daughter. Also, if anyone has any brilliant ideas other than that PLEASE feel free to chime in.

I hate this long-distance thing.

Thanks!

You can search for a small short term stay here…

Maybe try this place, too.

Often, hotels will make deals for “long-term stays”…you might want to speak directly with the Hotel Orrington or the HIlton Garden Inn. Also, you can try oakwood (www.oakwood.com)…they will definitely have short-term apartment rentals (everything included, furniture, linens, tableware, etc.), however, they will be expensive. As well, they will probably be located much closer to downtown than to Evanston. Good luck…totally get how you’re feeling!

The very best to your daughter.

Why doesn’t your daughter want to come home. Hip surgery is pretty serious. What is she having done and have you talked to the doctor about recovery and their thoughts on her being alone - even if you only stay a week per say.

When is she having the surgery - can you get away with a summer rental (sublet) of a studio apartment.

Thanks, everyone, for your ideas. I’m bookmarking all the links and will start to investigate seriously when I know more on Monday, the day that she meets with the surgeon again (it’s taken a year and a half to diagnose this). She doesn’t want to come home because she is supposed to work with a professor this summer and for some other reasons as well (I want to keep this semi-private). I’m hoping that she can put her cell phone on speaker when she is at her appointment, and we are e-mailing her a list of questions that we want her to ask the surgeon, including whether he thinks she should come home.

Sorry to hear about your daughter!

You might want to contact NU housing and see if there are any creative suggestions. I wonder if there is an extra room in a place like Engelhart that you could have? Or even in a room in one of the seminaries? I have no idea, just trying to think out of the box. Good luck.

The Homestead hotel in downtown Evanston rents rooms by the month (their website says rooms are available by the day, week, month or year). We stayed here last summer for a weekend, in a very large 1 BR suite, living room, dining area, good sized BR. I think visiting professors sometimes stay here.

My daughter had to have surgery Christmas break of her freshman year and I would wager that your daughter will regret not being home. However, I know it is tough to get a 20 year old to change her mind  You are a good mom for going - she is definitely going to need you. My daughter thought she was going to breeze through it and was surprised that recovery was so difficult. She went back to school in January, but still needed some help. It was a tough term! Feel free to PM me about dealing with the school. My daughter’s college was very instrumental in making sure she had her needs met.
Good luck! I hope she has an easy recovery!

APOL - your link is for a health science school in Minnesota. Not “our” Northwestern. The 952 area code should have given it away!

Thank you for catching my error!!!
My heart was in the right place, please forgive, EnoughAlready.

No problem - I knew your heart was in the right place!
It just struck me because I had never heard of NU having an alumni house that functioned as a hotel / hostel / b&b for NU alums. And I was just at the John Evans alumni center yesterday, as a matter of fact.

This blog certainly shows the benefits of an Alumni House offering short stays. Frankly, I am surprised NU does not have one…maybe someday?
:)

I think they need to build the visitor center to accommodate the 47,000 visitors they have - and maybe work with the city of Evanston to have some more hotels built - before they worry about an alumni b&b!

Just checking in again, wanting to say thanks a thousand times! My daughter is meeting with the surgeon today for details and scheduling. Once we have a date, I’ll spring into action. My husband convinced me that it doesn’t make sense for me to start calling places until I actually know when the surgery is going to be.

As for D’s not coming home, we realized that it might be best for her to be in Evanston even though it will be tough/expensive for us. She has a good surgeon there (who is the team sports doctor for the Blackhawks!), but we would have to find one here (and go through a lot of rigamarole to get a referral). If she had the surgery here and then went back to NU, she would not have the same doctor (or medical practice) to see for post-op care.

This is a wonderful forum; I thank you all so much for your contributions. I hope that you will call on me for any advice about Boston!

I’d like to second the suggestion of the Homestead, and also suggest that (if possible) your daughter schedule her surgery just after finals. Plenty of students every summer are desperate to sublet their apartments! Leases tend to start at different times, so you could easily sublet an apartment or a room for June, June and July, or June-August. I’d check Craigslist and have your daughter keep an eye out on campus. This would also probably one of the more affordable options, too! (Make sure you get one with AC though. Humidity is the worst!)

I just got a private post from someone asking about my daughter’s surgery, but when I tried to reply to it, I got a message saying that there was an incorrect “redirect”. No clue. Anyway, I belatedly want to thank everyone who had suggestions. Things worked out very well, but only because the surgery was right before Christmas, and our family (my husband, son and I) was able to take over her apartment since all of her flatmates were gone (they were wonderful about letting us stay). We stayed there for 2 weeks (till 11 days post-surgery) until her flatmates started trickling back. I was SO grateful to be able to spend that much time with her post-surgery, and she was in pretty good shape when we left. I cooked and froze foods like never before. NOTE: if you are temporarily disabled at Northwestern, you can get free taxi service from your abode (on or off campus) to class. You have to apply through Disability Services. Thought this might help someone at some point. Cheers, all (I haven’t been here in a while)!
