Hi. I’d love to get some specific information on the musical theater program at Muhlenberg. My daughter was on the wait list and just found out that she got in. Her second choice school (and the one she was going to) was an audition-based musical theater BA program in NY. I would love to hear about the quality of the training at Muhlenberg, specifically the music component. Can musical theater majors take theory and sight-singing, piano, etc. and if she wants that, is she better off double majoring in theater and music? She loved the feel of Muhlenberg, which is why it was her first choice. I just want to hear more about the program.

Congrats to your daughter. You can double major in theater and music at Muhlenberg.

There is no such thing as a MT major at Muhlenberg.

TheaterEdMom - I would suggest that you PM Teriwtt as her D just graduated from Muhlenberg and was very helpful when my D was interested in the school.

TheaterEdMom,
My D is a rising sophomore at Muhlenberg. She is a double major: Theater (with a concentration in acting) and Music (with a concentration in vocal performance). As already mentioned, there is no such thing as a musical theater major at Muhlenberg. She started with private weekly voice lessons fall of her freshman year. As a vocal performance major she is required to take these lessons for 6 of her 8 semesters at the college. She has taken Music Theory I & II and will be taking III next fall. Other Music major requirements include Music History I & II and some electives. She sings in the school choir and in an acapella group. She could take piano to fulfill free electives at the school. That would cost (I believe) an additional $440 per semester. I don’t believe there are any sight-singing courses but it is part of the Music Theory courses.

Don’t let the lack of an audition requirement fool you…there is a great deal of of talent at Muhlenberg, singing, acting & dancing.

With regards to actor training…you can’t take Acting courses until your sophomore year, which was a downer for my D. She will be taking Acting I & II next year. After that there are a number of different Advanced Acting elective courses to choose from, but they do fill up fast with upperclassmen. We wish that there were Acting III & Acting IV for a second year of intense actor training. Dance is a very important part of the program. Many students minor or double major in dance as well. D is not a dancer so she is trying to fit in as many dance classes as she can - by fulfilling free electives with dance.
