Colleges she is looking at: Middlebury College, Bowdoin College, Williams College, Amherst College, Colby College, Bates College, Colgate University, Hamilton College, College of the Holy Cross, Lafayette College, Trinity College, and Bucknell University.

Please state safety, target or reach.

Thank you so much!

I agree with @SternBusiness for the most part except that Trinity, Holy Cross and Bucknell could definitely be safeties.

Middlebury&Bowdoin&Hamilton -low reaches
Amherst&Williams- reaches
Bates&Colgate- target
Lafayette&Bucknell- low match
Rest are safeties. It’s a great list, good luck to her!
Chance me back please:

Using the post directly above, from the targets up, the student demonstrating interest is paramount because no matter what the numbers say, the acceptance rates are well below 20% for an unhooked student and could be worse for an unhooked female.

Must visit and interview.

You have no safety schools on this list. If she’s into LACs, make sure to add SUNY New Paltz.

A few notes-

As a white female from NY your daughter is a member of the most overrepresented demographic possible for the schools she’s looking at. Her competition will be stiff.

Is she being recruited for skiing? Has she contacted coaches? If not, she should. Athletics can help a lot at these schools.

  1. I think she could get into a reach or two, but they are still reaches.
  2. I think she could be denied from some of the matches, but they are still matches.
  3. Lafayette is probably the easiest school to get into of that group…and yet still a great school.
  4. Probably need to pick a safety or two
  5. Have kind of a mix of conservative and more liberal colleges here. You might want to do a little more research and see what would be a better match for your daughter. Bucknell is kind of button up compared to some of the other schools like Middlebury (which is more politically liberal) for example. I bet there aren’t too many people who apply to Middlebury and also Bucknell.

I think she may be a little light on APs for those top 5 LACs-- Amherst, Williams, Bowdoin and Midd. At those schools, not taking AP English, for example, is going to be a killer because most who are competitive applicants do so.

I think she could use a truer safety or two to be on the safe side, though I doubt she will need it.

Is the OP a parent or the student?

If the student is a rising senior and took the APUSH test last month, how does she already know her score?

Williams and Amherst are reaches for everybody, no matter who they are or what they’ve done. I agree with BatesParent2019 that showing interest is key for some of these schools - especially Bates. I’m also a Bates Parent 2019 and I know it’s important to Bates to show interest in them. Same for Hamilton - I was also a HamiltonParent 2014!

Your daughter has amazing scores. Other than Amherst, she has a good shot at all of them. Amherst is kind of a crap shoot.
Just wondering, how did your daughter do both cross country and tennis? These are both fall sports for girls?

^ At least in locales in the northeast, tennis is a spring sport, @catlover2000
