I got accepted into both schools. I don't know a lot about Davidson beyond the southern stereotype since I go to a prep school in MA. Colby is very similar to my current school- preppy, small and wholesome. I am thinking about pre-law and major in political science or history. I felt Davidson has a very good reputation in pre-law but most New Englanders don't seem to recognize its name. How do you think they compare in academic, students body, workload or anything else? Thanks !!

^which prep school in MA? You should know the lowdown on Colby: hockey, skiing, beer, etc.

Take a look at Lawrenceville’s college matriculation, and you’ll see Davidson is more popular than Colby.

Davidson has always had a solid reputation. Maybe it’s time to get out of New England and away from the preppy NESCAC?

You have to visit to decide.

Try Davidson- my daughter is going there next year. As a law partner here in NYC area in a major Northeast firm, Davidson has a better reputation. That being said, my partner has a son at Colby, and he has enjoyed his experience there. Both are great schools- good luck.

Thanks a lot. I think Colby is more popular in New England prep schools…maybe not true in NJ!

Thanks, I’ve never actually been to the South before. I feel pretty comfortable in New England but I’m looking forward to visiting Davidson!

Go south and visit. My D saw Davidson twice already and will be there April 13 for accepted candidate’s day.

Davidson plays D1 sports whereas Colby is a D3 NESCAC member. Once you get south of New England, most people will put these two colleges at the same level. However, Colby has the stigma of appealing to those with specific tastes such as winter sports and outdoor enthusiasts who want to be away from civilization. To most people, Maine is fine place to be for the summer but not for the rest of the year.

Davidson like Bowdoin was a men’s college up until the mid-1970’s and, I believe, is considered more conservative than Colby. Colby gets associated with Bates, possibly too often, as if they were the same thing.

HI tottos,

You have two solid choices in these colleges. My d attended a Mass. prep school and is now a senior at Davidson. She knows some students at Colby. She has enjoyed Davidson very much. I would be happy to put you in touch with her for her thoughts on both schools. Feel free to PM me of you like. I wish you the best with your decision.
