Davidson vs Vanderbilt

Hi all,

Deciding between Davidson and Vandy for next year. I'll probably be studying something along the lines of math and econ, my favorite subjects. Career-wise, I'm actually very interested in medicine, but I could also see myself trying to pursue something in equity/business instead.

I visited Davidson during Scholar's weekend and really liked it, so I think I'm leaning toward attending. I really like the closeness of students and professors, and the chance to get a well-rounded education. I'm afraid of grade deflation though -- while I'm sure I'll work hard, I don't want to have limited options for future jobs and/or grad school. Also, can someone comment if the atmosphere ever becomes claustrophobic after a while, due to the small town/campus population?

Thanks for the advice.

Hello! I’m glad you’re considering Davidson! I will let you know there is such a thing as “the Davidson bubble,” where students tend to get caught up in what is going outside of Davidson. But more and more, I see that barrier being broken down. For example, last night I was working on a paper in the Union, and the announcement regarding Osama Bin Laden’s death was announced. A crowd of about 100 students gathered around the TV to become more informed and discuss what this meant for the future. It was highly interesting. Also, I don’t think of it as claustrophobic here in part because of Charlotte’s closeness. Its not a very far commute at all, and there are plenty of places to explore!
