Davidson

how prestigious is Davidson College?

Why is it that you are so obsessed with the perceived prestige of colleges? You have made numerous posts that compare the prestige of various schools. In the bigger picture of colleges, careers, happinesss, success, whether someone views a school as prestigious is really not that important. Don't you have something else to think about?

^the majority of people on this forum think otherwise

^^^ I think the majority of parents think otherwise (with the exception of those who were raised in other countries where the system is different).

I live in North Carolina (the state where Davidson College is located) and not too many folks knew about the school until DC got into that basketball tournament thingy. In fact, I live in a county called Davidson (far from Davidson College, however), and most people confuse Davidson College with Davidson County Community College. That's about how much prestige you are getting with Davidson College. Despite this, it is a very good school. Prestige isn't everything.

Wow, that would be so terrible, telling someone in that area you're going to Davidson and they think you're going to CC.

Ha! So true!

Here in Georgia, I'd say that Davidson is one of the four most prestigius schools in the region, along with Duke, Vandy and U.Va. Of course, the person on the street will usually not know as much about an LAC as a big-time football university. But in general, I'd say that Davidson is the Williams or Amherst of the South.

I also live in North Carolina. Davidson is one of the top LACs in the country. I live in the center of NC (the Duke-State-UNC triangle) so the demographics/location where we are are different from Davidson County. In our area it carries huge prestige to go to Davidson (every bit as much as UNC or Duke).

I live in the Triad, so I can relate more with hornet than Sligh_Anarchist, however I have been in Davidson County and other regions and understand how that image of Davidson is acquired.

Davidson usually carries about the same amount of respect as UNC, however a bit less than Duke.

Also the CEO of one of the major employers in the Triad, VF Corp (aka owners of Wrangler and Ralph Lauren) has a Davidson degree! lol That may not mean anything to you, but Davidson is definately respected in the Triad region of NC.

Davidson is an amazing school focusing on undergraduates. Graduate schools are very familiar with Davidson and the quality of its students. Visit, talk with the faculty.

Yes, aaron981 and hornet are correct in their perspective because they come from urban spots in North Carolina, whereas I live in a rural area of North Carolina. Obviously, the only schools people in my area are going to be familiar with are sports-powerhouses.

Davidson is prestigious among:
-Southern employers
-Grad schools (across the country)
-The Research Triangle in NC
-NC high school students (they respect the difficulty of it)
-East Coast prep schoolers

Plenty of Davidson kids come from New England, so like Duke or Vanderbilt, it does have a bit of catchet. But it's not Duke or Vanderbilt; it's a LAC. That's always going to dock you a few general prestige points among those who aren't in the know.

I can tell you that among those in academia, it's well respected for it's programs, grad school placement, and overall difficulty. The work there is hard, and grades are (apparently) a bit deflated. I think it's fair to compare Davidson to Amherst or Williams for the South. Now, New England schools always seem to have more universal prestigious than their Southern or Midwestern counterparts, but I'd say as many people know Davidson in the South as know Amherst/Williams in the North.

We live in Asheville area and Davidson is very prestigious and tough to get into. Very popular choice. Not necessarily by those who would go to UNC Asheville, of course, but to those who are high achievers, Davidson is a strong LAC that rivals many top New England LACs.

how prestigious is it on the west coast like the Bay Area?

I live in the northeast and hadn't heard of it until CC

In the bay area, Davidson = San Jose State. Actually, scratch that, make it some no name community college. San Jose State is at least well known.

We know about Davidson in Houston. Very well thought of in academic circles. Good academics, difficult courses, quaint, small town 20 miles from Charlotte. From my perspective-underrated and often overlooked. A very fine LAC. Also Tony Snow got a philosophy degree from DC.

^^ LOL, there you have it.

Honestly, I grew up in NYC and live in the Bay area, and never heard of it until here on cc.
