Davis v. Berkeley

Hey guys, I got into both UC Davis and UC Berkeley and I’m stuck between the two schools. I’ve visited and researched both and honestly the only pro for Cal seems to be its reputation. I was hoping someone who knows more than I do about either or both of the two schools can help me out. Thanks!

It largely depends upon your major and your future plans.

well there is a reason that Cal has such a great reputation...it is strong in so many fields of study. so collegemom is correct..it depends on what you are going into. and if environment is a big factor for you, it also depends on what kind of town you want to live in. i would say davis is a bit more chill than berekeley.

Hey wooly - I'm in the same situation as you, but I'm going to Davis. The extra "prestige" factor just isn't worth it to me. There's plenty of people who get into higher-ranked schools who instead choose Davis. In fact, at the Regent's Luncheon, I met a girl who is picking Davis over Stanford! It all goes back to that old cliche: "College is a match to be made, not a prize to be won." As long as you have the drive to succeed in your desired field, you'll do fine at either Davis or Berkeley.

Haha, I like your style!

i'm in the same situation
i just went to see berkeley today
freakking RETRO school stuck in the 70s
but it does have a reputation

Oh, man. Why are people here so cool? Not a single "OMG GO TO BERKELEY DUH" response, and this isn't even the first serious Davis vs. Berkeley thread I've seen. If this forum were populated by people from my high school, you would absolutely be laughed out of here.

To anyone who chooses Davis over Berkeley, or is even seriously considering attending Davis after being accepted by Berkeley: You have my respect. It takes a lot of character to resist the pressure to attend the #1 public school in the nation. Seriously.

[EDIT: Grammar check! Heh, I'm such a loser.]

Ozphactor: I know EXCTLY what you mean. To the people writing these threads, I give you props for caring not about name recognition, but rather about the best school for YOU.

This is what makes me SO excited to be heading to Davis--everyone going seems so awesome (:!!

I also have a lot of respect for those who choose the school that they like best without putting "prestige" over everything. Anyway, these are the UCD students for you, right? You guys are awesome ;]. Have fun at UCD you guys.

Hey, Jas0n--you're from SJ? I used to live up there! What high school do you go to?

hey woolybugger...it's definately best just to go with your own gut instinct. hopefully you have seen and experienced both campuses. ppl on the davis forum will tell you all good things about davis and those on the berkeley forum will only say good things about berkeley. there may be things you don't like in either campus. i actually went to the berkeley forum and read one of their "davis vs. berkeley" posts. some people on there were saying some harsh stuff to the person who posted. they said no one picks davis over berkeley and davis is usually just a back-up school for most people. it was pretty harsh. so i say that it is solely up to YOU and try not to get too affected by what others on here say. good luck with it!

and btw...im from sj too! but i go to a small private school...bleh. i pretty much hate it and i'm excited for davis next year.

Yeah, those are the same Berkeley people who have over 3,000 posts on CollegeConfidential and desperately need to get lives...

Hah, I just went to see the Berkeley vs. Davis thread the OP posted in the Berkeley forum, and I found the "OMG GO TO BERKELEY DUH" comment. Well, actually, it was "are you outta your mind? davis??? what??? hello hello hello", but whatever, close enough.

I think that says something about people who go to Cal. Namely, that they are closed-minded, and that you are way too cool for them :P

Again, I agree. Man, I want to go to UCD. My appeal needs to say "congratulations!" I'm about to graduate from a new high school, Evergreen Valley High School. However, I left the high school this year to join a program called BioTech Academy. It's a program where we take the minimum HS classes required in a few portables on a community college (Evergreen Valley College) campus and take CC classes.

Hellothere77--that's so cool!! Hahaha, I really liked SJ, as sheltered and tiny as it was. But LA is cool too. [that's where I live now.

jas0n--you're so dedicated to this school, I hope you do get in! (: I haven't heard of Evergreen Valley. I used to go to Lynbrook High.

haha. I went to Mt. Pleasant

Prophasi: Did you enjoy it when we invaded a side of your campus >=)?

When was this?

EDIT: I'm an idiot. The first year of EV. I thought you were talking about some sort of prank or something. I didn't really care. More people = more fun. Except for the lunchlines. Took forever and a day to get some food.

hmm...i definately know people who went to mt. pleasant and who currently go to evergreen. not very many tho...like a couple. but it's so weird how some of us live so close to each other.

Jeez you guys should go to the Berkeley version of this forum. All the Berkeley guys ganged up on me when I brought up the bad points of Berkeley.

Better stay on my home turf next time!
