I cannot make a decision btwn both of these schools...and I have until June 1st!! My major is political science so I want to go to a place that will help me progress and be ready for career opportunties after college. So which university would be better to go to?????

The advantage of Davis for political science is that you are so close to Sacramento, so if you wanted to be involved in state politics, it would be easy to do. Otherwise I would opt for UCSD.

since you are not a biology or science major, I would go to UC-Davis

to be honest, the college itself is not going to make 1/10 the difference to your future as you are. That is, the average student who shows up for class, gets a GPA, and graduates from either school is going to have nowhere near the opportunities as one who gets involved. This means working with the career center to explore areas that might interest you and find out how to get into them, being active in clubs to show leadership (and gain exposure if they’re career related clubs), and most important of all getting internships.

I can’t stress the importance of this enough, because you write *“I want to go to a place that will help me progress and be ready for career opportunties after college”*which to me reflects a passive approach. Simply select the “better” choice and then everything falls into place after that. Maybe that works if you go to an Ivy or Stanford, where enough people are wowed by the name that doors will open simply by virtue of possessing a diploma. You have in front of you 2 fine choices, both of which you can use to prepare for your future. It won’t be handed to you – at a UC school there are plenty of opportunities but nobody is going to go around trying to match them up with you. They are large impersonal places, and “help” is not a good verb to be using because there is precious little helping going on. Try “make available”.

I don’t say this to scare or discourage you; it’s easily possible to have a fun experience, make lots of friends, get a solid education, and prepare for a bright future. But the burden is on your shoulders to make it happen. At a LAC or expensive private you get that kind of guidance, not at a large state school.

Thank you for all the feedback. I went to visit Davis today so I am getting closer to making a decision…

what did you decide?

UCSD is ranked 9th for political science.
