I am still going through the trials and tribulations of figuring out a spring college trip with my D. One configuration would have us in New York for several days and I was wondering if it would be possible to take a train to Philadelophia, visit U of Arts and take a late train back. I don’t even know how long the train takes, I guess I should look into that! In any case, if anyone has any ideas/suggestions or responses I’d be grateful. Thanks!

I've done the trip from Penn to Philly. You will have to transfer trains. The train rides arent more than 2 hours I believe. you can check the NJ transit website for more info. Make sure you do NJ transit and not Amtrak because Amtrak is much more expensive.

New Jersey Transit

hello, it is COMPLETELY possible to take a train, visit UArts, and take a late train back. When I visited UArts my junior year, we drove up from NY that morning and drove back, totally easy.

If you are coming from NYC, you have a few different options.

The Amtrak train leaves Penn Station in NYC and can get to Philadelphia 30th St Station ranging from an hour and a half to two hours....assuming it is on time. it is direct. you would most likely want to take a cab from 30th street station to UArts. It is walkable, but a cab is not too expensive that it's not really worth the walk (UArts is on Broad Street, which is comprable to 14th street)

There is also the New Jersey Transit train, which is a lot cheaper than Amtrak, but the "downfall" is that it is not direct to get to Philadelphia. You leave from Penn Station and take the NJ Transit to Trenton, NJ. Then you get off there, barely move, and get on a SEPTA train that again goes to Philadelphia 30th street station. I've done that a couple of times and it is cheaper....and it's really not confusing figuring out the 2nd train (which I was very worried about). That train takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes.

There is also a Greyhound bus that is even cheaper yet haha.....that one is of course traffic permitting, but they do say it will be about 2 hours, and the one time I did that, it was pretty close to 2 hours.

All the trains and buses run till late hours, so you should have no problem getting one back.

Let me know if you have any other questions about transportation!

My D took the Amtrak train from NY's Penn Station into Philly's 30th Street Station for the day roundtrip this past fall. That is definitely doable and a direct train.

Thanks everyone! I think I'll bite the financial bullet and take Amtrack. It sounds pretty easy, and I think our hotel will be a fairly easy walk from Penn Station in New York.

Okay, change of plan! I just saw that U of Arts is having an admission open house on April 4 and since we'll be at Muhlenberg the 3rd it just makes sense to stay and go, I think. My new question is--is this an ideal day to go? It seems that it would be, that there would be more faculty to see, etc., but I'm wondering if you lose any of that feeling of what the school is like on a typical day. If anyone has gone to one of these, I would love to hear about it. Thanks!

Hello, I have worked at the Open House and it is a great way to see the school. It is a very busy day because there are so many people visiting, so it's not always the best way to have as much individual attention and time to ask students questions. But it's a fun day and it still is a very informative way because all the departments are there and financial aid, admissions, etc are there to ask questions. And there are performances done by theater students to see all day! So either way, you will see plenty of the school.

Thanks BroadwayWannabe, we will definitely make plans to go. Also, didn't know there are student performances to see--that absolutely makes it sound worthwhile.

Just FYI, in addition to the student performances throughout the open house, the UArts SOTA production of Cider House Rules Parts I & II will be playing at the Merriam Theatre that weekend. Not a musical, but should be great.

And, if anyone's curious both musicals this semester (Bat Boy and Realm of the Unreal) will be playing at the end of April/beginning of May.

yes, there usually are a few songs and scenes presented by typically juniors and seniors in the theater program. and there is a presentation made by all the departments about their programs and such. it just gives you a sense of the program and the focuses.

last year into the woods was during open house weekend and i remember as a tour guide we were giving out free tickets to people attending the open house. cider house should be a great show. my roommate is in rehearsals for it and it's such a unique opportunity as a college student to be in a 6 hour play (don't worry, it's not 6 straight hours, it's 2 different plays haha!!).

and yes come see bat boy haha! :-)
