Days

Can someone tell me about all the days - Honors days, Capstone Scholars days etc? We want to schedule another trip for S to go down to 'bama and spend the night & talk to professor in his field and are just wondering when to do it. As its a flight, we’d rather not do it twice. Would also like to go to a game. I know that is a lot to ask. Do they get invites for those days?

S is admitted (yay!) and will likely apply to cbhp. (can someone please send me the link about how to get an interview tips, I can’t find it). I did find the resume info thread. He will likely deposit early to assure housing choices, but will probably wait for scholarship notification.

Capstone Honors Day is often held on Martin Luther King weekend. So, no football game during that time.

If I remember correctly, CHD does not include a campus tour. So, if that’s desired, you’d have to fly in early or return later and schedule a tour for that Friday or Tuesday (Monday is a holiday so I don’t think there’s any tours).

Also, another issue for CHD is that because of space concerns, only 1 parent can attend. That is why some OOS people come at another time so both parents can visit/attend.

Here’s the schedule for University Days. The problem though is these aren’t geared for honors students. These are more for general students.

[University Days - The University of Alabama](http://universitydays.ua.edu/)

As for other days, I don’t know if Bama has set them yet. I don’t think those are on Saturdays.

Idinct: If you are looking for an interview for CBHP, your son will need to wait. After all applications are in, they will be evaluated. Then, about 50 or so students will be selected to come to CBHP finalist weekend in February. The school does pay for the student’s flight and puts him or her up at the Capstone Hotel.

To have a better chance at snagging a CBH interview, it’s best to visit the campus soon and meet with Dr. Sharpe. Having some face time with Dr. Sharpe lets him know that you’re really interested in the school and the program.

S met with Dr. Sharpe but only for 15 mins; so not sure if he could or should request another meeting.
What happens at Capstone Scholars day, is that an invite?
Any tips about the cbhp essay? I have m2cks resume info.
Thinking - get football tickets first(!) then try to schedule an overnite for Thurs and dept meetings for Friday? Or Sun/Mon. What do we think about that plan? I think he has some Sat fall soccer games though, so not going to be easy.

who do you contact about going down on one of the University days? are we too late for the October date?

For the CBHP essay, keep it to 500 or so words. Remember, there are lots of essays to read, and if it’s too long, it probably will not be looked upon favorably. For my son, he just submitted an essay he had written for other schools. It had some very unique tidbits, because of where he had lived, what he had done, etc. It was very much keeping with his personality.

S met with Dr. Sharpe but only for 15 mins; so not sure if he could or should request another meeting.

Even if your son has already met with Dr. Sharpe, it’s still a good idea to at least stop by for a few words to express continued interest.

Good idea. Jami Gates could help set up dept meetings. Did you do the campus tour when you last went? Did you tour honors dorms?

Yes, we did the tour with Jami and saw the dorms. Nicest college dorms ever. Is there anything special about Capstone Scholars Day? What happens if there isn’t a tour or anything?
Also thinking that H may want to go since he hasn’t seen campus, but he could always go without me.
Good point about Dr. Sharpe, when you say “stop by” that means get an appointment, right?
S is playing fall soccer, so chances of finding a Sat when there is a game that works will be slim, but still going to look into it.

Is there anything special about Capstone Scholars Day? What happens if there isn’t a tour or anything?

CSD is often for students who’ve already visited the campus - hence no tours. The whole day is full of various meetings and activities.

If you want your H to see the campus, then you should probably go another time (like a football weekend) and include a tour on Friday or Monday.

Good point about Dr. Sharpe, when you say “stop by” that means get an appointment, right?

I would try to schedule a small appt to discuss CBH. It’s a risk to just stop by without knowing when he’d be in his office.

**S is playing fall soccer, so chances of finding a Sat when there is a game that works will be slim, but still going to look into it. **

Hopefully, you can find a home game that would work.

I just received an email from regional rep about my request to schedule an “overnite”, I didn’t realize that 'bama doesn’t do those. I thought I had read that someone was told to schedule one. No biggie though, I can see why they don’t do it. My older D told me horror stories about overnites with soccer recruits at Cornell. But, it changes my thoughts about scheduling a visit as I was thinking of just S down as a possibility. I saw the Capstone Scholars Day agenda from last year, looks like some interesting presentations. S hasn’t gotten to see/hear anything about his college/major so that might be a good option. The one parent thing might be an issue though if we both wanted to go, I’m not sure.

the Honors College arranges over-nights.

Tell Jami Gates what you want, what kind of kid your son is, etc. She’ll arrange the overnight.

Thanks m2ck, I thought I read that they were available. I will contact Jami.

IDINCT “Also thinking that H may want to go since he hasn’t seen campus, but he could always go without me.”
My whole family went last time My wife and D went to all the Capstone events. I got to wander around campus with my S at our own pace. Was a good visit. Well worth the drive.

Football - that 11/18 games is looking like a possibility to tie into a visit- although probably less festive since its on a Thurs eve right? It might be easier to get some appointments for Weds/Thurs or Fri. Plus tickets on stub hub are reasonable.

Hmmmm…Thursday night game… I’ve never been to a game during the week so I don’t know if the tailgaters will not be there, but the game itself should be just as spirited, etc.

Anyone know if Tailgating will be restricted for that the Nov 18 Georgia St game because it’s on a Thursday? Since school will be closed on Friday, I’m thinking the tailgaters will arrive Thursday morn??

Anyways…please note that there won’t be classes on Friday, so appts might be hard to get that day. **I think the school offices may be closed on Friday **since it replaces a fall break day.

for those who wanted to know about parking/walking for gamedays…there’s good info here…scroll down [UA Gameday](http://uagameday.com/football/whats-new.php)

m2ck: aren’t classes canceled for Thursday but are on for Friday?

Might be cold too since its in Nov. Will have to find out which day classes are in session, might have to do Weds/Thurs. I would rather do Sat, say in Oct but soccer games seem to be scheduled every Sat until mid-Nov; we shall see how much or if S will be playing due to his knee issues however so we may play it by ear. I like to plan, but may not be able to in this case. I had mentioned Thanksgiving game since I knew their wouldn’t be a school related issue , ha-ha tickets start at $250 each- plus airfare would be ridiculous anyway.

Oops…you are right. Classes are canceled on Thursday. For some reason I was thinking the following day was canceled.

Thanks for catching my mistake. :)

Since there’s no classes on Thursday, that suggests that tailgaters would show up Wednesday. However, I would imagine a much reduced number.

Classes will be in session on Wed and Friday, although Wed may be a better day to sit in on classes.

As for the cold…Do you mean at the game? Basic cold weather clothes should suffice. I would also bring a scarf in case there’s a breeze.
