Dc++?

Is DC++ a safe way to download files at northwestern? Does anyone have it or know if it is common that someone gets caught, or even if torrents are a lot less or more safe to use?

Anytime you upload you get a message from Northerwestern BAYU (Be Aware You’re Uploading). It is no measure that you are/will get in trouble, so dont freak out when you see it, Northwestern isn’t going to punish you for stuff the MPAA or RIAA wont (programs for instance). That being said, I do know of people who have gotten the dreaded letters from the MPAA/RIAA from torrents/limewire – so dont be downloading music or movies from campus. PeerGuardian might help, but I have no idea. Nor am I good enough with computers to try proxies.

My semi-fool proof suggestion? Take your studying for one night to Burger King (or another coffee shop I guess) with open WiFi and DL to your hearts content.

I agree with the above! There are so many coffee shops and restaurants that have free Wifi. Downloading is just a short walk away. Plus, I actually know of people who have gotten those letters and/or fines, so I think it’s a small price to pay for something that carries a great risk.

The network on campus is seperated into routing nodes by building, rendering DC++ more or less useless (unless I’m missing a key component, and I’m not a computer science major so I could be).
