Any advice on whether the purchase of a DCI computer via the Cavaliers Computers program is worth the money? I noticed on my visit many of the students have the Dell DCI. I was just wondering if it was worth it or if I should go to the circuit city or best buy and get a good one.

I bought my laptop directly from Dell and saved a nice chunk of change.

If you buy a Dell not through Cavalier Computers, use one of Dell's famous coupons. They change every week but certain sites like www.onlinecomputercoupons.com make it easy to spot this week's deals.

what about the fact that the DCI computers have the updated software and systems that are necessary and valuable for UVA life. Wouldn't it be worth it to have the 4 year warranty and a help desk if you need it closeby. I just didn't know if I should pay that much more just to get that warranty and extra software, is that necessary?

Freaked, you still are the best! Thanks for the tip!

ozzie, just about any computer on the market these days will be meet your needs as a student. The computers offered through Cavalier Computers do as well, but they also exceed their non-DCI equivalents in price. My laptop was $900 through Dell (with one of those coupons that freakout mentioned) and I didn't get the multiyear warranty. If I had wanted to, it would have been $300-$400.

How about the new macbook? It can run on dual windows or apple. I have been thinking about purchasing this for my d. Anyone have one? When pricing it through Cavalier and on Apple's website, it really isn't much difference in price at all and you can get a 4 year warranty only through Cavalier Computers. Apple doesn't even have the 4-year available from their website.

I was looking through this today and was interested in the macbbook...but I have never used mac before...=/

Rumors say there's another lower priced MacBook being announced soon. We're waiting to hear about that.

can cavalier computers service IBM computers if required? If not, is there an authorized IBM repair shop in C'ville? Do current students recommend printer/scanner capability too, or is a standard printer sufficient for A&S curriculum?

studious mom, the new MacBook models were announced this morning. Check the Apple website for details.

Thanks FreakedOut! I just contacted Cavalier Computer about the new MacBook and they said that they will be offering it. Probably two models to choose from and will do so as soon as they check to make sure it works with UVA's stuff and get pricing. He said to check back on their site....that they would have info asap.

If price is any kind of concern for you, I would still recommend buying your computer elsewhere...

New MacBook looks terrific...love the friendly price.

I talked to one of the reps tonight and it really does look good. I am just waiting for DCI to offer it!

New macbook prices available at Cavalier Computers online today! Check it out. What do you all think?

Seems like you actually save a few dollars through CavComp. The black MacBook is $1499 through Apple, but you'd have to buy Office (Student version $150), ILife ($79), and extended AppleCare warranty (3 Years only) for $249. With the on-site support and service and additional year under warranty, I think we'll go with the UVA program.

Are you going to get that one, studious mom? The only difference between the macbook pro and this one it looks like is the video. And I am not sure that my d would need that anyway.

Sorry. I think ILife is included on both the Apple direct versions of the MacBook and the UVA package.

Yes, jml, we're going to go with the black MacBook. The Pro would be better if powerful graphics are needed (i.e. games or high-end drawing applications). My S will use the laptop mainly for Office and internet...and, of course, playing music, watching dvd's, storing photos, chatting, and all the other fun stuff.
