Great decision! GW isn’t going to WL this year, so a lot of kids thought the same way.
It’s more that GW has more guest speakers and visiting professors that come from the DC political/journalism world. The courses may or may not be that different.
One thing that can be a plus or a minus is that GW has a satellite campus a few miles away in a residential area of DC that used to be a junior college. It’s got lots of the green space that the central campus is missing.
Oops, see she’s decided! Good luck to her.
What a great summary of what happened and why she is going to GW! Thanks for posting all that - we other posters really get invested in the stories of these great kids and it is so rewarding to read how it plays out. Congrats on a decision that was based both on being informed and what just felt right.
Congrats!!
We had a similar situation with D2 who was accepted and deposited at a great LAC in California (had the bookstore purchases and everything!) but was then offered a spot off the waitlist at a New England LAC this week with higher prestige and a “better name” and the finances would have been the same. After weighing all of the options she decided to stick with CA school, and we definitely think it is a better fit for her, but let her make the decision on her own. It was such a rollercoaster and In think she was putting pressure on herself to take the better name school, but in the end the fit was perfect for her.
Hey @JDCaliMom congrats for you and your D on GW!
Haha looks like BU is gonna get double screwed from California. My nephew had plunked down his deposit for BU for pre-Dentistry, but he cleared waitlist with both UCSD and UC-Davis yesterday, so chances are likely he’ll renig on BU. Leaning towards UCD, but I think that’s the mom wanting him to be closer to family members (we’re all in the Bay Area) as opposed to other family pushing him because of the BU name. To me it’s a no-brainer he should go for Davis at a 50% discount.
Congratulations! DC does have 4 seasons!!
Congrats! My DS (AU) loves DC and his Best Friend attends GW. BF actually loves not having a cafeteria and my DS was jealous because AU’s cafeteria was so bad they had a student uprising this year resulting in a search for a new food vendor. Of note because DC higher humidity it can seem colder than the actually temperature. My DS says the best purchase we made for him was his North Face back to berkely boots. A lot of kids were miserable the first snow day because their feet were wet and cold. We also got him one of those interchangeable jackets that could be worn together or in separate pieces. We also found Bed Bath & Beyond’s pack & Hold service so useful. If you have any DC questions please feel free to PM me.
My D was waitlisted by her #1,#2 and #3. She narrowed her acceptances to two, ranked #4 and #5, evaluated and visited and re-evaluated.
She committed on May 1 to #5.
1 school called May 2
She re-evaluated based on what she knows today vs 6 mos ago.
She chose her comitted school. IMHO, I think the WL gave her time to get past the shiny hype and really look at what was a good fit for her without any noise from peers and society.
So proud of her too! I’ll take this maturity moment over any A+ grade!!!
Congrats OP! The kid my school picked at the end of the cycle was definitely NOT what any of us would have expected at the beginning of the cycle. And he had a wait list move on him too. It really is a process and it’s exciting to see your young adult making a clear headed, mature decision. Hope she has a great freshman year!
