DD wants to major in Education and Psych--other paths to counseling?

Hi. My DD19 wants to be a teacher (early childhood or middle school) and a therapist. She’s pretty set on these, though I’ve suggested to her that she might change her mind down the road. We are pretty early in the game, but I am seeking schools for our preliminary research that have good programs in both. There are so many different ways to become a therapist/counselor, but I know she will have to go to grad school for both paths.

I would love any suggestions/insight on schools to consider. She wants a medium to large school, preferably OOS (we live in Maryland). Her first attempt at list included FIU, Vanderbilt, Purdue, UGA, UC San Diego and Nova Southeastern. My suggestions include UMCP, Indiana, Auburn, Penn State, Ohio State. Thank you!

In NY at least, her certification would be either Early Childhood, K-6 or 7-12. She would have to decide between those age groups.

Going in state-- wherever that might be-- would make it easier to get certified. Check your state Board of Education website for particulars on teacher certification.

Boston College has a school of education. Social work is also an avenue to counseling. Boston College has both.
