double degree...
how is that determined at rice?
i'm interested in music and another major.. possibly science
i don't think i apply to both schools for admission. right?
hm so,
do i decide that i want to work on double degree after i am accepted?
should i apply to shepherd school first?
replies are appreciated. :)

there are two paths you can take. one is a double major, which is done by satisfying the general graduation requirements and the requirements of your individual majors. this takes at least 120 credits. you choose one of them to be the major that shows up on your one degree, though it says at the bottom you also fulfilled the requirements of another major.

the double degree requires 150 credits, and you get two separate degrees. normally there is no point to doing this. no one is ever going to care if you have two degrees or a double major. since you want to do music, you have to apply to shepherd. from there you can decide if you want to do a second major, or decide later. keep in mind shepherd is very hard to get into and it is pretty serious. you have to be really really good. sometimes for an instrument they dont accept anyone in a given year.

My roomate was the only undergraduate percussionist last year. So yea, they definitely only take the best even if it means not having an instrument.

But on the brighter side, double majors are very common at Rice. Double majoring with music may be tough, though, since music students are usually busy with rehearsals and concerts. That kind of complicates your schedule.

But Rice is flexible - you can do it.
