DD's MD & DO School Chances?

My DD is in her last year of college, graduating in June, when she starts the MD school apps.

Here is her stats and her list of schools. Please comment
We are conservative on school selections

B10 P11 V12 =33 MCAT GPA 3.5 U of Chicago Bio Major Resident of CA

Instate Schools

Loma Linda
UCD
UCI
UCL/M

Out Of State Schools

Matches

George Washington
Howard
Morehouse
Uniform
Creighton
NY Medical
Commonwealth
Meharry
Marshall

Reaches

Texas A&M
Texas Tech-Foster
UT San Antonio
Albany
St. Louis U
Drexel
U Utah
Oakland Beaumont
U Kansas
U S Carolina
V Tech

DO Schools

Western
ACOM
Chicago

If there’s one thing I’ve learned during this cycle it’s that the concept of matches and safeties does not apply to med school applications.

I would also recommend that your search look beyond school stats and consider the OOS friendliness of various public med schools, school missions and other selection factors.

(You can find some of this info at the US News graduate school site. $30 will get you access to the premium content --which includes the # OOS applications, # OOS interviews granted and # OOS students accepted – for 1 year.)

IIRC, TX med schools are not especially OOS friendly and are required by law to reserve 85% (maybe more?) for instate residents. Admission preference for OOS goes to students with ties to TX. (For Tech, A&M and UTSA, a demonstrate interest in rural primary care is also a consideration.)

Uniform = Uniformed Health Services University? UHSU requires that matriculants be armed forces service members (not to apply but in order to matriculate into the school). Preference is given to current and former military personnel. All matriculants must meet all physical and mental requirements for armed forces enlistment and sign an enlistment contract as a condition of matriculation. UHSU students are required to enter a military residency and incur a service obligation.

Loma Linda is a religious school and requires a lifestyle contract of its matriculants. (Mandatory chapel attendance; mandatory attendance at religious instruction; no alcohol, tobacco or drug use (even off campus); strict dress code; strict sabbath observance.) Not saying this is a bad thing–just applicants need to be aware of these conditions upfront.

^^ First list is not always the best, will refine the list with other considerations.

If I recall correctly from my interview at UTSW in 09, it’s 95% in state (doesn’t apply to MSTP, hence my getting an interview).

Based on 2011 AAMC chart Table 1. The following % of OOS students have been matriculated

T A&M 4.0
T Tech 8.8
T Tech- Foster 3.7
UTG 8.7
UTHSC San Antonio 10.2
UT H 10.0
UTSW 14.3

For UTSW, that 14.3% includes the MSTPs so for straight MD it’s definitely not 14% OOS.

In search of med schools for DD, I came upon several public schools with exceptional OOS% accepted. Wondering if you have any comments on those schools

U Iowa, 30% that is pretty high comparatively AVG gpa 3.7 and Mcat 31.7

U Vermont 60% Really? That is better than lots of Private Schools gpa 3.6 and Mcat 30, that is wonderful.

VCU 42% GPA 3.62 and Mcat around 30? some thing wrong with that?

Ok, here is a revised list

Please comment

What about AZ, aren’t they still open to OOS? And closer to home. Other than AZ, most of the western states have no interest in CA kids unless there is something remarkable- URM, history of serving the underserved etc., IIR, my western DD got interviews in AZ & TX OOS and the rest were back east.

U Colorado has an “unofficial” requirement for 400+ hours of clinical volunteering if you want to be considered seriously.

U Utah will only consider OOS students if they one meet of these criteria:

Marshall’s admissions says:

Thanks WOWM, Will consider remove U o U and Marshall, I think we can meet the U Colo’s requirements. Will have to take out U of Ark, only 1%OOS

somemom. AZ only accepted less then 10% OOS, so I took it out. And since CA in state is very difficult to be accepted by CA schools, we are applying just for the sake of, Davis is the only one has any chance. Loma maybe taken out as well, because heavy religion.

We own a rental near Touro, a DO school. We will put in an application for that, if she ended up there, we can give her a room. I am in that market for fixuppers, just lost two houses in Vallejo…

Oh, I will remove Marshell and U o U, but replace them with Oakland and Vtech.

GWU

Please comment
I took out Colorado because she told me she did not have enough clinical
I know GWU is a crap shoot, but Her grand aunt would like to see her if interviewed

I think DD applied in AZ’s first season of accepting OOS & then she withdrew when accepted early to her #1 choice, so I did not follow up. Thanks for the update as to how many OOS they actually took.

I have a question
Indiana U states that if the OOS student has some ties to the State will have advantage.

My DD’s grand uncle is a faculty there dose that count “some ties”.?

See some comments here about what constitutes ties to a state:

<a href=“When applying to OOS med schools, what counts as "ties to that state"? - Pre-Med Topics - College Confidential Forums”>When applying to OOS med schools, what counts as "ties to that state"? - Pre-Med Topics - College Confidential Forums;

I’m confused by UCM. Do you mean UCR? UCLA?

Merced, the new med school.

FWIW, Tulane gets 10,000 applications/year just like GW.

^^ I treat those high volume app private as OOS applying for State. They are all crap shoot for my DD.
