De Anza CC

no i'm not apart of the honors program it's kind of pointless really; people think it's equivalent to TAP but it’s really not. If you want priority registration then by all means sign up for it but I think it’s a joke. The “honors” classes are just one extra essay in an ordinary class…sometimes even less.

I didn’t go to any of those schools. I was in the Los Gatos – Saratoga School District.

umm...we were talking about De Anza NOT Foothill

there is NO TAP at De Anza and i have no desire to go to foothill even if it is "seriously 5 minutes away"

Ah, what major are you?

history.

De Anza really isnt that bad...you should honestly look into it. All you have to do is stay focused on your goal, do your work, and then your in and out super quickly...seriously

The general education classes at Deanza are very easy( no work required to get a A). Its the science classes you have to worry about as they are usually harder than APs. For instance, my friend got a A and a 5(AP) in AP physics C. But he got a C in David Newtons mechanics class.

@makin it rain. If you went to Monta Vista/Leland, you shouldn't have a problem at Deanza.

I didn't ): my HS isn't that great haha.
Do we still have to take the science classes if we're not a science major? I'm looking into the business route.

You don't have to take the rigorous Chemistry/Biology series if you're going Business. But it is required to take one physical science (ie., Astronomy) and one biological. Also, one of the two science classes must have a lab (the ones with the underlines in iGETC).

De Anza is a great CC. I surprisingly enjoyed my attendance here; and the professors, if chosen carefully, are pretty cool. The only downfall is parking and registration. Expect to get into and witness collisions ;).

Follow iGETC: http://www.deanza.edu/transfer/pdf/IGETC%2006_07.pdf and you should be fine. :)

hahaha I 2nd the " expect to get into and witness collisions" There's a lot of dumb ass driver's who speed in the parking lot, back out without looking behind/ talking on the phone and hit other cars without the decency of leaving a note.

I'm taking Newton next year! Is he really that tough? (I'm taking his theoretical class, if that makes any difference.) I'm looking forward to it, though. Someone on ratemyprofessor.com described it as being like "taking a class from Kurt Vonnegut," which was all I needed to be swayed, really.

The 4 series, 2series or 10? I took 2 of the 4series with him and they were the toughest courses I have ever taken in my life. For example, he asked this question; http://nebula.deanza.fhda.edu/physics/Newton/4A/4AExam2Page4Spring04.jpg

The guy is a really great teacher though. Funny too.

Oh my god, so I went to the early registration today and PARKING WAS INSANE! I swear I was so scared of hitting pedestrians...and I have to drive down highway 85. I swear, I'm going to kill myself every morning.

Did you guys take Counseling 100? I signed up for it during orientation but I don't know whether I should take it or not. I don't think it's really worth the gas money.

I took it before I started deanza. It was pretty helpful to show you the "path" on what you need to do to get out of there without wasting time. They give you the IGETC and CSU requirements papers and some other hand outs, but I think if I had known about this forum back then, I wouldn't have gone.

I'm taking Physics 10 - I'm not enough of a masochist to take his 4 series, ha. I'm not a math person, but I find conceptual physics really interesting.

makin it rain: I always park in the open spaces behind (not IN, that's illegal) the parking lot of the Jamba Juice across the street. The first thirty or so spots are usually taken, but they extend pretty far down the street, and it's better than a) paying the astronomical parking permit fee and b) risking your car and/or life in the De Anza parking lot. :)

Hm, calvinator, what else did they teach you about? Cause I was handed the IGETC and UC requirement papers at orientation. Did they help you with picking courses and developing a plan?

They didn't help me pick courses or develop any plan, just more broad info. They leave that up to the deanza councilors. It sounds like you already know what you're doing.

carwatha, I took Phys 10 with him last quarter and got an A. I've always been a curious person about physics but was always scared of all the math, so this class was a perfect balance! The only math you'll do is basic algebra and you don't have to buy the book. Final is like 50% of the grade and is just questions from previous exams, word by word.

Sounds like the bio10 class it took.(i.e final same questions as midterms).

Hm, so I shouldn't take the Counseling 100 class then? Has anyone else taken it?

I can't comment on De Anza, but...

DVC has a fair reputation and I've found that most of the student body and fair number of the instructors suffer from a mild form of mental retardation. I'm reasonably sure that the average turnip-brained high schooler can stumble through DVC with at least a 3.5.

Seriously, you will do fine.

Hmm. De Anza included, I've attended four different CCC's. Granted, one probably doesn't count since it was for a P.E. class, so I guess three might be a little more right. I'm not sure I see a difference in terms of difficulty from my experience. ('cept I think I had more reading for my survey lit course... or I was just extremely lazy.) It may depend more on your style of learning and whether you prefer semester to quarter or vice versa. Something I like about the quarter system though is that you don't have to take as many classes to be a full-time student. I think De Anza's pretty awesome in terms of the technology department though, at least compared to the other schools I've attended. <--- is lame and appreciates that the soap dispensers are automatic; oh, and ELMO is cool!

As for GPA, I had a 3.7 or so in high school, and my overall college GPA is a little higher, though I've only finished one quarter at De Anza, and I got kind of lazy, so I got a 3.63 for that quarter. Actually, my only issue would have to be that it's a little harder to get a 4.0 since there's a +/- system. Though at the same time, whatever B's you get are more valuable. Kind of sad when you get a B+ and it's treated like a B in schools without it. That totally kills your GPA if it's a 5 unit course. I guess it evens out in the end!

TL;DR version: It's not so bad. :)
