De Anza to UC___?

Hey I am currently enrolled in De Anza CC and am planning to attend a UCLA, UCSD, UCI or UCD under BIO.

I have some questions on what classes I need to take before I apply for transfer. Also I would like you guys to look at my current transcript and would appreciate you guys to give your honest feedback. Where I can improve on, and any tips or advice you can possibly give me. I'm all ears.

Summer '06 (at ohlone in HS)
Spch 104: B

Fall 07 (not ucla material i know)
Phys Anthro: B-
Macro: C
Meteorology: B-

Winter 08 (did real bad)
Nutrition: C
Ewrt100: P
Ewrt101: P

Spring 08 (trying to get my act together)
Intro to Bio10: (A or A+)
EWRT1A: B
Asian-Amer. Lit: (A or B)

I'm not great at math. Placed into Math112 (gdi) and I'm aware I need to get into Calculus and stats.

I've seen the transcripts you guys have here, and I don't have anything nearly as good. But I'm here looking for help, and thats better than sitting around hoping things will change on its own, right?

I know that I'm not exactly in the best position to transfer into a UC as a bio major right now, but I need to know what I have to do to get in. I'm determined and probably ignorant, but maybe being ignorant will help me in the long run. haha.

Okay. Here are some questions I've had, and talked to both DA and Ohlone counselors and they couldn't give me a straight answer.

1) On Assist.org, I selected "From: DA" to UCLA(just for fun) under Biology. Now, for the classes on the right, which are the DA's equivalents, do I have to complete all of those courses before I can even apply to UCLA? Or do I take like 2-4 of those classes before I apply.

2) Now remember, I placed into Math112 at DA. And haven't even taken it yet. Am I gonna be at DA for like another 3 years just to climb my way up to Calculus?

For those who don't know what DA's math system works, it looks like this:
Math 112, 114, 51,45A, 45B, Math1:A,B,C and Math10
everything in bold are UC transf.

So lets say i finish the first 3 non-transferable math courses, thats already one school year. then i have to take 45a,45b, and math10. on top of that I needa take Math1A (and B, C if i need to?)
Just because of math alone, it looks like I'll be in a JC for an eternity.
Am I right or wrong?

3) Looking at my transcript right now, and if I apply t this coming oct/nov, and say I start taking all the right classes and keep knockin down A's and the occasional B's. Will I have a chance getting into UCI,UCD, UCSD, UCLA? (last2 are 4 lawlz)

I mean basically, I think I have what it takes to do well in the classes that are given to me. Its just that I did so ****ty on the math placement test, it seems that alone will keep me imprisoned at any JC for at least another 3 years. What do you guys think?

1) It says right on the top of the ASSIST page what the minimum courses you need to take, but since the major is impacted, you pretty much need to complete all courses to have a chance--the avg GPA of admitted Biology students was 3.65 this year.
2) DA really likes to prepare their students on math, so they have a lot of math classes, but it's not the only community college out there. For example, Foothill combines both pre-calc classes into just one class, and I believe San Jose City College (semester) has trig and pre-calc all in one class.
3) I don't think you'll be ready to apply to UCLA this Nov., but UCD's Bio BA sequence seems pretty good and not as demanding.

Thanks alansda, for the quick response. Theres another thing I forgot to mention.

At Ohlone's I took the: Accu Math Placement and placed in Math-152A/152/153/155

My understanding of Ohlone's (Semester) math system goes like this:
Math 152, 181(trig), 188(precal), then Math 101A/B/C

In comparison to my placement in DA(quarter) math system, where should I take math at? I'm sure there is little difference, but I have to take what I can get.

Math 112, 114, 51,45A, 45B, Math1A/B/C and Math10

Plus, I'm also considering moving down to Santa Monica to room with a friend and attend SMC. SMC just so happens to accept "AccuPlacer" scores too. So If I placed better in Math at Ohlone, I might be skip SMC's placement test, and just start off where I left off at Ohlone.

You guys are definitely more knowledgeable and helpful than those counselors at school!

Well, you'll end up at the same place in both colleges:
Ohlone
Year 1: Math 152, 181(trig)
Year 2: 188(precal), Math 101A

DA:
Year 1: Math 112, 114, 51
Year 2: 45A, 45B, Math1A

So think about the cons/pros of each college (convenience, cost, sem/qtr system, etc)

For UCSD , UCI, and UCD you should go sign the guaranteed admission contracts at the transfer center... you sign them about 1 year prior to transfer and you are guranteed admission upon completion of what the contract states.

you are not ready to apply this upcoming fall . You need to complete all prequisites for the Bio major + 60 units + IGETC or other GE pattern (for your benefit not mandatory) all by the spring prior to transfer.

good point. i'd liek to hear everyone's and anyone's thoughts. positive and negative feedback welcome!!

I think the chance to go to UCLA is really modest, SD is pretty hard, Davis and UCI is moderate hard. Anyway, do the TAA as soon as you can

Math is the biggest obstacle for u, I have been tutoring for Math for a while and I see very few people who only got into 112 in their placement test can strive up to Math 1B (the prereq you need to finish by the time you transfer right away. Good luck and work hard.

okay, thanks for your honest reply. by the looks of it, how many more years do you think i'll be in jc?

Why would it be hard for him to get into davis or irvine? His grades aren't that bad. Or is it because of all the math classes he needs to take?

I'd like to know too McNasty. But I honestly think, that if you get a 3.0 and above, and do well in your major classes, it shouldn't be too hard to get into davis or irvine. Do you have similar grades too or something? just wondering...

I go to West Valley College, about 5 miles south of DeAnza. We're on the semester system here, which I prefer.

I don't know much about DeAnza, but West Valley's transfer agreements with Davis and Irvine only require a 2.0 for a guaranteed admission. If DeAnza doesn't have something similar, I suggest heading over to WVC :) You should be meeting with counselors at whatever school you are at and getting the scoop on guaranteed transfer admissions so you can set things up!

Annika

If anything I think he has a higher chance of getting into UCD and UCI than UCSD and UCLA. Look at the acceptance on their website.

for all but UCLA you only need a 2.8 for guranteed admission- not necessarly into bio major for UCSD- the gpa is higher because bio is impacted but anything around 3.0 gets you into all of those with a TAG/TAA

I had to take a lot of math and i applied and was accepted as a math/econ major

I started with the Elementary Algebra math.

So i took Elementary /Intermediate/ Precalc+Trig/Calc 1/Calc2/Calc3/Lin/Diff/ and Stats

Erg - the 2.0 above is a typo - it is supposed to read 2.8 for guaranteed admission as Malishka31 states.

Annika

Dang Malishka, thats must have taken a lot of hard work and dedication to start from Elementary Alg and major as a Math/Econ major! I'm in a similar boat, so at least I know its do-able. Thanks to ele902 and Annika for your advice.

I know I can sign up some sort of TAG/TAA with UC's and keep above a 3.0gpa. But I'm unsure of what level of math do i need to take in order to sign a contract. For example, lets say i take math at a semester system like ohlone's.

Ohlone
Year 1: Math 152, 181(trig) Year 2: 188(precal), Math 101A

^ After which math courses must I take in order to be eligible for TAG/TAA?
Or do I have to finish all the courses listed above in order to apply for transfer? Most UC's for Bio request me to finish at least one course in Calculus.

Good job Malishka31 for your Math achievement.

The reason I said it's not easy for Ej20 is mainly because of his/her Math. A TAA will send him comfortably to the UCD and UCI pretty comfortably with a 2.8 or above (3.0 recommended cause I heard someone said that I may be changed in next year about the minimum GPA requirement.)

Thanks s_dragon. Anybody else have any input?
