De-committing

Olddoc- not trying to argue at all, definitely not “holier than thou” but am very familiar with the college golf world and trying to advise accordingly. That is all.

It’s a business - plain and simple. A recruit is fair game until the LOI is signed. Just as a recruit may not honor a verbal, a coach may not honor a verbal as well. Sometimes a recruit doesn’t develop or improve as hoped. A recruiting plan or team need may change. If the kid realizes that he verballed based off a high of a visit, media, or pressure from outsiders, the best option is to tell the coach you wish to explore other options. If you are still interested the program you gave a verbal to, tell the coach that you are still interested, but desire to explore other options, which will allow you to make your decision with 110% confidence and assurance.

make sure your other offer is still on the table!!

my nephew was in the same boat about 2 years ago, he ended up going the “honesty is the best policy” route and it all worked out in the end. For the most part, these sports communities are small, most coaches know each other and its hard to keep anything under wraps, I believe being upfront in the end will allow everything to work out and you will be seen as someone with a lot of integrity.
