Okay so I am a senior in high school and I am getting ready to fill out the FAFSA and my mom passed away last year and I do not live with my dad I live with my grandparents. What would I do for the FAFSA? Please help me! :)
Thank you.

First, find the Financial Aid forum for those questions. You will find the experts in there. Tell them if your grandparents are your legal guardians. If not then I’m pretty sure you list your Father. But check.

Moving thread.

If your grandparents are NOT your legal guardians, you use your dad.

Sorry to hear about your mom.

You have to use your dad’s info.

Are there any strategies for Kaitlyn? If she could get substantial need based aid based on her grandparents’ information, is it worth it to jump through hoops to change legal guardianship to them?

It’s only worth it if she has a chance at the schools that meet need - meaning top grades, scores, ECs.

^^
no.

If she changes to her Grands for guardianship, then she becomes independent when she grads from high school. So, she would then qualify for a full Pell grant…assuming that she has no money.

so, if she has little/no contact with dad, if he’ll do what’s necessary to make the Grands LEGAL guardians thru the court, then that would be a plus.

How old is Kaitlyn? If she is 18, I think this is a moot point.

Also, does her dad have significant income and assets? If he is unemployed, and has no assets, it’s not going to make any difference in her aid…except that independent students get $4000 additional Direct Loans.
