Possibly not very many people applied for an interview in your area?

Just going along with merryecho, Duke guarantees that you will get an interview if you apply before that date (assuming you live in an area with an interviewer). However, they will try to interview all applicants and so basically in your area either they have a lot of interviewers or like merry said not very many applicants (or some mix of both).

if they have a lot of interviews, why would i be called if i’m post deadline?

I called early and they said interviews weren’t even available in my area, and when I asked if I could drive 45 minutes to somewhere I knew they’d have interviewers they said no just to send a personal letter of rec from someone

It’s unlikely that the reason is a shortage of applicants. ED apps were up 32% this year. It probably has more to do with the OP’s area having an excess of interviews either due to interviewing expediency or due to sheer number of interviewers.
