For ED and EA, when they say that deadline is November 1st, do they mean it has to be sent by 11:59PM EST October 31st, or 11:59 EST November 1st?

Because I know that the common app forbids you from sending things online if you pass the deadline...

Any clarification would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Deadlines are usually defined as the date by which application must be postmarked, meaning on November 1. Since most apps are now sent electronically that generally means sending it on-line on or before Nov 1 meaning before November 1 ends. Some schools may differ so check with each. Also, don't assume you can wait until last minute; some possibilities you may be overlooking:

On November 1, your computer may die, you may have a power outage, or your internet provider may have an outage (consider how you will feel if any of those happen at 11:58 p.m. just as you are about to click "send").

You finish the app and what appears is some page you were previously unware of that you must physically sign and mail and get postmarked on November 1; or even worse some page that your school counselor must sign and send and get postmarked by Nov 1. (The post office is not open late at night and your counselor will undoubtedly be unreachable.)

I wanted to send my application in early but my teacher still hasn't completed my letter of rec despite the fact that I gave him the forms over 3 weeks ago. Will the college hold it against me that i chose to send things in at the last minute right before the deadline?

The deadlines are for what you, the applicant, are responsible for. They fully realize that transcripts and recs are forthcoming. Don't fret (nor wait until last minute either)

colleges know that recs aren't totally in an applicants control so if they arrive even a week late it matters not, and YOUR shoudn't be mailing them anyway, the teacher should

so just submit your portion when you are ready, don't wait for the teacher, it will be fine to have them arrive seperatly, most reccomendations arrive seperately, as do transcripts, test, scores, etc and colleges are very good at matching things up and putting them in the correct file
