Deadlines Shmedlines?

So I applied ED to Brown and I didn't know the CSS profile was due on Nov 1. I never thought I would have to go the financial aid website to see the deadlines, i figured they would be on the freshman applicant page. So I missed it. I filed it on November 21. I called the office and asked if it might be done by decision time. She said probably not.

My question is- If I am admitted, will they make sure my financial aid is provided? Will I not get aid my first year? Has this happened anywhere else? I'm worried because I would go to Brown in a heartbeat (thats why i applied ED) but I can't without aid.

Thanks guys.

If you are accepted, pick up the phone and call the school, apologize for sending the Profile late, explain that you’ve been accepted ED and ask when you might get an estimated aid package. Then contact the admissions officer, explain your predicament taking full responsibility for missing the deadline, and ask if you can please have an extension on your ED response until you’ve received the financial aid package. Make sure to follow up in writing.

Thanks so much- follow up in writing to my admissions counselor or the financial aid department? Will I be given a specific person to contact if I am admitted?

When you call on the phone…ask the name and address of the person who gives you the information about the extension. Your follow up in writing should be to that person.

And just in case…if you don’t get accepted ED, look right NOW for all of the deadlines for your other colleges. And do NOT MISS THOSE DEADLINES.

I agree with the above poster. IF you get accepted, you need to contact financial aid immediately and explain that YOU missed the deadline. Do as stated above…ask when the school will have a financial aid package for you. Then ask for an extension to make your decision.

In the meantime, if it were me, I would submit my other applications for admission. You can always withdraw them if you are accepted to Brown with a financial aid package that works.

I’m going to add, personally I think the title of your thread makes it sound like YOU don’t think deadlines are a big deal. They ARE a big deal, and at some colleges, missing the deadline WILL have an effect on your aid, and the timeliness of a financial aid package receipt.

Yes, I agree with Thumper. I thought this thread was going to be about someone who missed the deadlines stated by the college for admission and aid, and was admitted with a good offer.

Id always heard the reverse. That aid & admissions officers are just looking for a way to " thin the herd" and those that miss deadlines, do it for them.

@thumper. I KNOW that deadlines are a big deal, I titled this thread the way I did so that people would be attracted to it and comment on it. If I thought it wasn’t a big deal and that I didn’t make a mistake, then I wouldn’t have bothered asking.

Brown just got me with the deadline thing because it doesn’t say it on the freshman admissions page, like it does on Rice’s for example. Live and learn I guess. I have submitted applications to 6 schools in total (including brown) and have been accepted to 2 so far. Of course, I haven’t made any commitments until I hear back from Brown.

@emeraldkity Yeah, I bet they try to ‘thin the herd’, that’s why when I called the lady said they probably wont have my aid package done in time. But i thought maybe admitted students are treating with a little more priority.

I guess if I’m deferred then admitted, that would be the best thing because I met the deadline for RD. Then again, I might get rejected and it won’t matter.

Thanks for the help.
