Dealing with bad textbooks.

One of my listed textbooks has really bad ratings(3 stars) by amazon. Should I just not buy it and find a better book? Have any of you guys done this?

Tell us what book it is. Sure, there are terrible books, but you still have to read them and do homework. Supplemental reading is probably the option you should take, if you feel the book is not adequate to help you master the subject.

Better extra than less.

[Amazon.com: First Course in Probability, A (7th Edition): Sheldon Ross: Books](http://www.amazon.com/First-Course-Probability-Sheldon-Ross/dp/0131856626)

Do you have friends studying at other unis? One thing I did was to ask for lecture notes from friends doing similar courses. I.e. Economics notes from someone taking a course in Chicago or LSE or English notes from Cambridge.
Even just having another perspective from different professors can help you understand material. but u do probably need the prescribed one as well, as the professors stance and work etc. will likely follow it.

Unfortunately. For less technical subjects, poor ratings can just be an example of highly divisive viewpoints about the often, controversial subject matter. For instance, for most books on Vietnam, you’ll either have overwhelmingly high reviews or overwhelmingly low reviews, especially if the latter is from the vantage point of policy-makers (e.g. the highly desirable McNamara). As another example, I read a book about capitalism and democracy and found it highly elitist and inadequate - yet the professor chose it because it provided some insight about power and policy-making in the United States. So, it can be terribly rated and do some good in the process.

cmon did she really ask that question? i like none of my texts and im sure their ratings are near absolute zero but i nonetheless have to read them and understand what the hell the authors are talking. unless you wanna fail, and get a STD like my friend did. he had to beg the school to let him stay.

I’m a guy. And I didn’t mean that I won’t get any textbooks. I was thinking about buying better ones that my professors aren’t using but nonetheless, are about the same subjects.

then what happens when you get hw from the bad books?
