Hey Everyone,
I was wondering if any current students could tell me how they keep track of/transport all their stuff when the school year ends. Of course, there are the trunk rooms, but it seems that those are a) sketchy places to house valuable things and b) not capable of providing enough room for every student. Is there a popular storage facility nearby or some kind of student shipping service that's well-respected and/or affordable? Any input you have is great; I have no clue what to do. Thanks so much!

Almost everyone stores things in the trunk room, and you'd be surprised how much space they have. I've never heard of a student being denied space (though the early bird gets to store all their boxes together). It's true that I wouldn't leave a treasured possession in the trunk room, but they're pretty safe. Especially because we have new rules where everything has to be in boxes and and be labeled with your name and year, so it keeps them from getting too lost.

The main problem is that you can't keep furniture in the trunk room, so if you have a big chair or something that can't be collapsed into a box, you won't be able to fit it.

I wouldn't worry about it right now. Closer to the end of spring semester, the school will publicize about storage facilities in the area that will take your stuff. I think there's one that's run by Amherst students where they actually bring your stuff back to your house in the fall, and they were giving out fliers during room draw last year.

I've left most of my belongings in the trunk room, including my TV in its original box. The trunk rooms are locked during the summer, so as long as I've claimed my things right away in September I never found a reason not to rely on them.

Smith College: Living at Smith - trunk room policy and possible off-campus storage locations.

My daughter has tried multiple summer storage tactics:
trunk room...ok, but she still had the furniture issue and a few things were missing and/or damaged
local storage facility...it was fairly isolated, she felt uneasy about going there alone; also the hours were limited
Ideal Movers...my favorite!!! boxes were delivered to her, 2 very nice young men came and picked up ALL of her things, stored everything for the summer and then delivered to her room in the fall.

MAstorage is run by five college students, and in part by some old high school classmates of mine, and operate in basically the same way as Ideal Movers.

Um, but they DO deliver things at pre-appointed times during the first week before/of school. which DOES include convocation night. It just happens that two years in a row they've delivered stuff to my house, so... awkward.

Yeah. but other than that I've heard mostly respectable stuff about them, even though I've never used them myself.
