Dean Honors Scholarship clarification?

They might divide up the first pass by expected major. Just a guess, I have no idea how they do it. Maybe over that time period, that really isn’t too long to look at that many, if there are that many. After all, they sometimes have to grade 10 page papers for maybe 50-75 students in a few days, and that requires marking up the papers with comments.

For all you last minute submitters, here is something from Jeff’s blog. http://tuadmissionjeff.blogspot.com/2011/11/guest-blog-deans-honor-scholarship.html

I am going to take that first example he uses in the last paragraph

as a continuing shout-out to my D’s project of 6 years ago. While chemistry wasn’t her passion for a major, it formed the basis of her project. It was fortunate she was in AP Chem at the time. It all came together for her.

Am I correct in my understanding that the deadline is at mignight tomorrow?

Yes, that is correct @jupiter98. Anything postmarked tomorrow if sent physically or time stamped before midnight Saturday night/Sunday morning if sent electronically.

@melonstarbursts

Keep in mind that each legislator only has 1 award per year and they usually give it to the same person for 4 years (as long as they meet the scholarship requirements). You can see which legislators will have an “opening” and also if a legislature doesn’t have someone in their district they can give it to another person. Most legislators give to the person with the highest GPA and test scores.

You will get TOPs and the $800 stipend (since you made a 28), this year TOPs is around $5100 (it is different for each college/university).

Do your research and apply for any all that you have a chance - good luck.

@fallenchemist I just realized that I made a huge mistake. My teacher submitted her rec, and I submitted my essay along with a picture of my project, but I didnt attach my application with all my info on it with it…do you think they will still accept it? In the subject of my submission I wrote "my name’s deans honor scholarship submission, so they might be able to put it with my Rec without the app I forgot to submit. I just hope I didn’t do all that work for nothing.

Has anyone ever heard of a distinguished scholar (27k) winning DHS/PTA? I realize it’s highly unlikely but to your knowledge, has it happened?

@av0cad0

If people are being honest with me, which I have to depend on for a lot of what I say on here and it has worked out well so far, there have been a few cases. Very few I’m sure, but it has happened. Don’t lose hope! I know it means nothing, and it means even less compared to $$$ in the bank, but I admire people that put in the work against long odds. Now I don’t encourage hopelessness, as you have seen. But your situation is not that.

@jgalls

That’s a new one to me, as far as I can recall. They have all the work, right? The project and written statement, the survey part of what the teacher was supposed to submit, and the rec itself. So I would be surprised if there is an issue, because you submitted the project and supporting material, and just forgot the “paperwork”. But I think all you can do is send the app portion you omitted and apologize that it didn’t make it through at the same time as the submission itself, which was on time.

Unless you win, you will probably never know if they took it anyway or not. I think they will, because as I mentioned earlier Tulane is always on the side of the student in situations like this as far as I have observed. They are NOT sitting there licking their chops and “heh-heh-hehing” in glee because they get to screw a student. Nothing in that for them. They certainly have to be fair to all students as well, and I can’t say they won’t make a good faith decision that this is more than a technicality and so it is too big an exception, but I don’t think so. You submitted a DHS project and supporting materials on time and in good faith.

It isn’t like you needed more time to fill out your name and address!! It makes no sense compared to the reverse situation if you had submitted the teacher stuff and the application, but not the project. Even if truly inadvertent that, of course, would be unfair to give anyone extra time for that.

Thank you @fallenchemist !! Nice to know that there’s a chance, however small!

Here is a DHS project that made the news. Local, but still… http://www.sunherald.com/news/local/counties/hancock-county/article49291025.html

He is from Biloxi, MS. I think it is an excellent project, personally. I am no expert but it seems very well executed technically, to me, and certainly is fascinating to watch. Definitely cannot pick a city with more history of drag than NOLA, I don’t think!

FC, thanks for sharing! So interesting to see what the box can mean to this individual!

@DebmomNY

I know! I mean the idea of the box as metaphor for keeping emotional things stored away and the opposite of opening it up is not groundbreaking, but the way it was presented and the personal depth involved in the presentation was first rate, I thought.

Fallenchemist - what are the Next Steps for the DHS? Are people notified that they are being considered? Are there interviews or supplemental information, such as essays, that a student needs to submit? I read that decisions are made by the end of February. Just curious about the timeline in between.

@Weinstein1

Other than IF they email you about wanting to interview you (see other thread) http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/1842059-when-do-applicants-for-pta-dhs-find-out.html#latest there is absolutely nothing you can or should do.

Is interviewing standard? If they don’t email you regarding an interview, are you not going to get it? Bummer regarding UPS, as they do not have a key to my building and it can be really hard to get shipments.

If they don’t contact you about an interview it absolutely does not indicate you cannot win. Again, I commented on that already in posts #7-8 in that link.
