Dean J, please explain how UVA looks at class rank.

Dean J, can you help me to understand how UVA looks at class rank? I read the post you wrote on the admissions blog that says that 98% of this year’s early actions students are in the top 10% of their class. Now I am worried because my son is in the top 17% of his class. The class rank used by his school system allots the same GPA to an AP course as it does an honors course. If my son had taken all honors, he would have gotten straight A’s. He has taken 6 AP courses and all of his electives are academic. How do you look at the class rank supplied by his school while still placing emphasis on rigor of course load?
