Dean J or anyone else who may know--when will the admissions website be available for online apps (ED in particular)?

august 15th (according to website)

We always aim for mid to late August. At the moment, we're tweaking a new feature and I think we'll have it tested and ready to go by Monday.

There's been a little message about what students should be working on if you look at our website. The three essay questions have been posted for a few weeks now. Filling out the forms shouldn't be tops on your to do list...unless the essays are done.

Does anyone have their essays done? I wouldn't expect that at this point.

I have a question for you Dean J, there seems to be a problem with question 7 on the essay portion for the Transfer's section. I spoke with an Admissions counselor and she said that its suppose to be "choose one of the following"; not write about all of them... I just wanted to confirm if this was true or not. Also, will this be fixed? In addition, how come transfers don't have the option of doing an "open" topic essay like the freshmans? Thanks!

ps. whats the length for the other questions? (it doesnt say on the application)

I hate to say it, but our publications person okayed a proof for the paper application that said "Please answer ONE fo the following questions", but when the printed copies came back, it said what you see now. The online app has the correct wording. Sorry if that threw you through a loop.

This is the first year transfers have had a "creative" essay. In the past, they've just answered the first few questions you see: Why do you want to transfer? Have you taken time off? and the rest.

Would you like yet another essay? ;)

Honestly, we get what we need from transfers as the application stands currently. In addition, you already have seven statements to write. If you convince me otherwise, I'll push to change things for next year, so let me have it!

As for length, think "personal statement". Don't write a paper like you would for a class. Half a page is fine.

Some of those questions only need yes or no answers, so don't feel like you need to wax poetic on why you didn't take time off in your educational career.

o boy...i better start workin on that UVA application lol :-)

me too... i've started brainstorming for the essays so i need to write full sentences now

Dean J - sorry for another app question. There is a section that asks for dropped courses. The answer is none. Yet the next question asks for courses you have attempted but did not receive grades--I assume that is NOT asking for senior year courses which you have been enrolled for but have not yet completed? Is that correct?

John, that's the First Semster/Trimester Report. Students fill that out after the first marking period grades are ready.

Dean J - thanks so much for the help.

Dean J, for transfer applicants, would the faster you turn in your application, the faster you would receive a decision? or does everyone get their decision @ the same time?

and I emailed one of your representatives, i believe her name is Veronica, for the minority outreach office, and i have not received a reply; it has been about 3 weeks since I emailed her. Could you provide me with the number or email of someone from the minority office that IS available? I check on the website but all i seem to get is emails but i dont know who's available and i would rather speak to them by phone!

Also, do i have to answer all 7 even if one or two do not correspond to my situation?

PS. I dont feel like convincing you to change question 7 into the open ended question because if i cant write an open ended essay question then no one else should! haha :)

mojojojo69, you will get your decision at the same as everyone else. DeanJ already answered your essay question, just pick one. I believe Ryan Hargraves is prompt with his email replies, but you have to remember that the admission offices can be busy sometimes. Try again with Veronica Cooper to see if she just forgot to reply.

my question wasnt about picking a question for #7, it was about answering all 7 of them. If you check the application, there are 7 questions, with question 7 having 3 options... Some of the questions dont apply to me so i dont know whether i should answer them.

She still already answered your question. There are a few yes-and-no questions among the 7 questions. I'm assuming that is what you mean by some you don't apply to. I believe that a simple "No, I have not..." statement would suffice. Not submitting anything would be considered an incomplete application more times than being considered that you didn't do/get/have whatever.

I better start practicing on that paper version I got in the mail hehe :)

Personally I like PDF because I can fill it out and print it.

I'm not sure I completely understand the question about the essays. Here are the corrected transfer application questions.

1. Why are you leaving your current college? Why are you applying to the University of Virginia?

2. What are your educational or career goals, and how do they relate to your planned course of study?
If you are applying to the College of Arts & Sciences and are undecided about your major, indicate your general area of interest.
If you are applying to the Architecture, Commerce, Education, Engineering, or Nursing schools, tell us why you have chosen this field and what experiences (work, internships, etc.) have prepared you for it.
If you are applying to the Five-Year Teacher Education Program, indicate your academic major within the College of Arts & Sciences and your intended teaching area (e.g., elementary education, secondary education).

*3. If you have participated in activities or received awards that are meaningful to you, list them. *

4. Since you graduated from high school, have there been periods of time (other than summer vacations) when you were not enrolled in college? Do you plan to spend the Spring 2007 term away from your current college or university? If the answer to either of these questions is yes, please describe, in chronological order, your activities or employment during these periods.

5. Have you been employed during the school year? If so, please state the nature of your job, the number of hours per week you have worked, and your reasons for working.

6. Is there anything we should know about you that has not been covered in these questions?

7. Answer one of the following essay questions. Limit your response to one page.
a. What is your favorite natural phenomenon, and why?

Our phone number is in the bottom right corner of our website. Just call our office at (434) 982-3200 and they'll put you through to Veronica, Ryan or Dean Gregory. Any student can call the main Office of Admission number and ask to speak to either the "Dean of the Day" (we take turns answering calls) or someone in the Outreach Office.

My question was, since question 4 does not apply to me, should i leave it blank or would 1 sentence be enough? thanks!

How can it not apply to you? It's a yes or no answer...

oh, i think i misread the question, sorry, nevermind
