Dean Jean

Jean Danielson, a professor and mentor who had a knack for spotting and nurturing academic talent during 39 years at Newcomb College and Tulane University, died Monday [July 5] at Canon Hospice of complications of thyroid cancer. She was 77. As an associate professor of political science and, later, director of Tulane's honors program, Dr. Danielson made a point of being accessible to students whenever they sought her out.

Those of you who had the pleasure of getting to know Dean Jean, or of attending a gathering with "Dean Jean on the mezzanine" will know that her spunk and spirit will be sorely missed. Despite her health issues, she was fiercely independent and a delight to chat with. RIP, Dean Jean...

No one else has posted? I guess the fact that she retired as director of the honors program in 2004 and served as “advisor at large” until about a year or so ago means most here do not know of her or her accomplishments in her 39 years at Tulane. She was an outspoken opponent of the Tulane-Newcomb merger, and the fight to bring back Newcomb as an independent school still lingers [Panel to rehear Newcomb appeal; suit asks Tulane to resurrect college | NOLA.com](http://www.nola.com/education/index.ssf/2010/07/panel_to_rehear_newcomb_appeal.html)

It is an interesting read. And Dean Jean was a fascinating woman.

I never really knew her, so I didn’t have anything to add. But clearly she was a huge part of the Tulane identity for years. I wouldn’t have agreed with her about the lawsuit, but at 62% it is almost a women’s college anyway, lol.

It has taken me many days to adsorb the news and get past my grief. My son was one of Dean Jean’s last “kids.” She pushed him, she challenged him, she nurtured him, and she set him upon a course that will lead him back to NOLA where he will follow in her footsteps as a mentor as he provides medical services to city and people he came o love under tutelage.

It was the people, like Dean Jean, that caused my son to choose Tulane as a college freshman. I am so sad that we did not have that one last cup of coffee last February dear lady, and now I know why you did not feel up to it.

All you young angels up in heaven better get your ***** together, cause Dean Jean will not put with with whiners and under-achievers. Get ready to earn your wings the hard way!
