Dean's Honor Notification

Today Undergraduate admissions notified us by a phone about Dean's Honor Scholarship.
One full-tution on the table. Time to relax a little...

Congratulations! My D got the phone call also. It is a lot to think about, isn't it?

Wow -- Congratulations! Best of luck with the decision making process.

Congrats! I wish I had decided to app to Tulane in time to qualify for it. But I was recently admitted to Dickinson with 100% of my need met, and it changes your options so much when you have a free/nearly free ride somewhere.

Congratulations TanCat and ThatMom!

congratulations. And, I will add, that in my experience, the school's interest in these students does not end when they decide to attend.

Thanks, CD, Fireflyscout and blueyed1. CD I may PM you in a few weeks with some questions.

Absolutely ThatMom

Congratulations!! Our family's only regret was that we failed to read those brochures in time to apply for that DHS! (DSA is great, too, though.) I'm glad you did it! So happy for you!

My son received notification by phone today that he was a DHS recipient. Besides the extremely generous full tution part of the scholarship, what other benefits do these students receive? What factors are other recipients using in making there decision on whether or not to accept this scholarship? Do they bring these students ot NOLA for a visit?

Any feedback from other recipients would be appreciated.

Lol, kklicker....I think my D was so surprised that she didn't really grasp anything. All I got out of her was that it was an automatic acceptance to the Honors College and that there would be an Honors Weekend (when? I don't know they said they would mail something). So I am just waiting for the package and hoping we don't have a conflict with dates.

We had heard so little from Tulane that it had sunk to the bottom of the list, with the scholarship we are now rethinking options, but I think it will take a visit before she can decide.

I would be interested in hearing from other DHS recipients, what criteria you will be using to make your decision on whether or not to attend Tulane in the fall. The scholarship is certainly enticing and from everything I here the campus is running relatively smoothly. My understanding is that all DHS recipitents are also part of Tulane's Honors Program. What are your thoughts on the Honors Program? Does everyone think the quality of education will be what is was pre Katrina? Will NOLA be a place you want your child to be for the next four years?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

We are planning on attending one of the Honors Weekends. Tulane has an undergraduate degree in Pulic Health, which is what she is interested in. On another thread they were discussing how small the program was (this is the first year). Also, from what we have read, on these boards and the news, the school seems to be recovering. I am pleased to see them put more emphasis on volunteering - this is a big plus for my daughter. Also, the way they are restructuring the college is also appealing. I will also admit I work in local government and I see the truth in the statements about contributing to the rebuilding of a major city.

I think that attending the weekend is necessary for my daughter to see the school and meet the professors and the students.

I am hoping that the changes they are putting in place will reduce the party reputation of the school.

Concerned Dad is a mod and regular poster who has a son that is a Dean's Honor Scholar, I am sure he will give us more info when he gets a chance to catch up with this thread.

We also visited Tulane last March, so we have seen the school pre-Katrina and my D kept it on her list even after the hurricane. We also live in hurricane country and I was impressed that the colleges were very organized in getting the students out of the way of harm. If anyone wonders, we are not concerned about another hurricane. It can't be helped - it can only be prepared for and Tulane did seem to be prepared.

The Honors Program at Tulane is not as all encompassing as it is at some other schools that actually have a Honor's College. Each term there are selected honors courses offered. Most Students will tell you therer are not enough offerrings, and they are not broad enough in scope. But class size is limited. My son has been very involved with pre-med courses, as he is apply for early decision (not early admission) to Tulane med, so he has not ventured into the broader selection of courses yet. And, he is very involved with his work with TEMS.

Obviously, I have no concern with being in Nola, and my last college-bound kid will probably apply there next year. Say what you will about the changes to Tulane after Katrina, but the actions of the adminstration and the disaster plan in effect before Katrina was flawless. None of the kids were in any danger, and they were all well cared for.

My son is just delighted to be back on campus, and while his main gripe is that there seems to be fewer choices at Bruffs right now, he feels the quality is better.

Daughter got the honors letter today, but no letter or call about $$$$. Guess that project was not good enough. I would love to hear what some people did who got it. And are the 1/2 scholarships out also?

"If anyone wonders, we are not concerned about another hurricane. It can't be helped - it can only be prepared for "

I appreciate your sang-froid but another Katrina WILL put Tulane out of business. Hopefully the chances of that in the next few tears are small. The downside of a scholarship is that if you have to transfer the money does not go with you and there is very little merit money for transfer students at most schools. It is always prudent to consider the worst case scenario even if you judge it a remote possibility.

For those of you not getting full rides you should calculate in tuition increases. This is true for all schools not just Tulane. Typically they will be in the 3-5% range at most schools but every now and then a school decides to throw in a whopper. The University of Richmond did that this year.

As for Tulane early on post-Katrina Scott Cowen the university president said there would be no dramatic tuition increases however he has recently been quoted as saying next years raise will be at least 10%.

And let them be led by fear!

csshsm -- my daughter's situation is similar to yours. She received an acceptance letter to the Honors Program 2 days ago along with an invitation to visit Tulane on one of 2 special weekends in March set aside just for Honors students. But, as of today, no word at all on merit $ of any kind (no DHS, DSA, Founders, nada). Maybe more scholarship letters are still being mailed? Or at least notification of some kind to those who applied for the DHS that they were not selected will be forthcoming. Having patience this time of year is really tough!

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.

I buckle up every day and never plan on having a wreck. Is that because I am over cautious and led by fear? Or is it a prudent precaution? Different strokes for different folks I guess.
