Thanks but this seems like it is a lot harder to get than everyone says

"My son had high SAT's (top percentile and an 800 in math) and was in the top 3-4% of his high school class with 10 AP's, not to mention solid EC's and he didn't get it. It is highly competitive."

So this is not good news...

Any top scholarship is highly competitive. My D received the Dean's Honor Scholarship last year. She had a 33 ACT, top 2% of class, 8 APs, 3 college classes, 4 year starter Varsity Tennis (2 years captain) and a lot of community service and other clubs. BUT, they do give you a chance to distinguish yourself with the project. I believe that the statistic is that they award 100 of these scholarships (and hope to yield a third of those) every year.

But remember, the purpose of these types of scholarships is to lure top students away from other colleges. Also, the numbers do not mean everything, but they do count for a lot.

I believe that you said you already submitted your project, all you can do now is wait until February and see what happens.

I am going to have to go to OU! It is the only my dad will pay for...

I am going to jump off a cliff now.. thanks for all your help.

Today is not a good day.. I just found out that just from moving my GPA has dropped from a 4.0 to a 3.87.. I have never got a B by they transferred all of my grades as a 95... Because my old school just wrote A... I currently have a 97.4 for my few AP classes...

3.87 = just kill me now..
I hate moving...

I just recieved 18k merit scholarship from Tulane.. I won't find out about the full ride until Feb...
Is this a good sign or bad...

Man I sound whiny...

What kinds of things did people do for their projects?

I got into Tulane before my November SAT scores were sent - now i'm up to 1340 (w/o writing section). I didn't get any money with the acceptance, but should I go back now and ask them to reconsider? I need the $$$!

There was a student last year who asked Tulane to reevalute their application after new scores came in. Tulane did and the student received a scholarship. It never hurts to ask. The people in the Admissions and Financial Aid offices at Tulane have always been very nice to deal with.

How elaborate is the project for people that usually get this? Does it say a lot about you or is it just a creative project?
I have a 4.0/4.8 GPA, 1410 SAT, 33 ACT and would REALLY like the dean's honor scholarship (who wouldn't?) because of the financial crisis. I just found out that I may not receive in-state tuition from my state school and my family doesn't have much $ for me for college. I'll quite whining now. :)

lang,
There are other ways to get scholarships that can be stacked to equal full tuition (e.g. a merit scholarship combined with a community service scholarship). I would encourage you to apply for both the DHS and a community service scholarship if you have been active in community service.

First post baby! I’ve stalked threads for months but have never posted.
I have a 4.27/4.6 and a 1430/2190 SAT (I’m taking them again in Oct. with hopes of getting a 2200+) with not a lot of community service but strong ECs/leadership stuff. I need scholarship money like nobody’s business. Chances?

Aim for a 2250+ on the SAT

I’ve got a 4.61 weighted (not sure of unweighted) GPA, 5 APs so far (scores of 5 on all) and taking 5 more AP classes this year. I’ve got a 2260 on the SAT, and just retook it yesterday in hopes of upping the writing. I’ve got very good volunteer/independent community service, a 12+ hours/week job, president of Leo Club, and editor of school paper/yearbook for past three years. I’ve also won various national writing awards, including the NCTE Achievement Award for 11th grade students…
All this to say: What do you think my chances are for DHS? I understand it’s a very competitive scholarship, but I really loved New Orleans as a city, and I think I’m going to love Tulane when I formally visit campus at the end of the month, but I can only go if I get decent merit due to family aid complications.

Also, I’m currently racking my brains for DHS project ideas…is there anyone who has experience with DHS/has won it themselves off of whom I could bounce ideas via PM? Not that I don’t trust you guys, but with a project like this that is so focused on creativity, I don’t want to potentially have someone use an idea I post =)

Now that the deadline has passed, what did you choose for your “box” idea?

I know this is an old thread… but does anybody know how many DHS they give out?
