Frm what I have seen on this board, Tulane offerred Deans Honor Scholarship to 100 applicants last year. Can any of those browsing this board let us know when we can expect to hear from Tulane regarding these.

Is the notification by mail? Can we also check from our online status?

First off, i love your name...Go spurs! secondly they inform people on February 20th through Fedex. I dont know if they only send it to the people who get it or send something to everyone. I know that the people that get it get a package in the mail. There is no way that you can check it online either. I tried to see if they could even tell me if they had received my project, and they wouldnt even do that. So yeah, i hope thats all of the information that you needed, and good luck to you and your project.

Yeah, Tulane sends out notifications on February 20. I was actually told by my admissions counsellor that my project was received. It's odd that they wouldn't even give you that information.

^^ Oops see post #12 too. Good luck to all of you!!

Last year the letter sent with the DHS scholarship said it was offered to the top 50 students, but when people inquired with the admissions office, they clarified that they offered 100 hoping to net 50 (they got 40).

^^^ I am guessing the number of applicants will be mentioned in the award letter the recipients receive. At least that was true last year. Stay tuned.

Hi jym - As a nervous father (and Tulane grad 1977) I would love it if my D got a DHS. I know they are coming out soon, but humor me and tell me what you think her chances are based on your extensive experience with this.

National Merit Finalist

Presidential Scholar Candidate

SAT - 800 V, 730 M, 800 W

GPA 4.35 out of a possible 4.5 or so

AP Classes in US History (5 on exam), English (5 on exam), Micro and Macro Econ (current), Chemistry (current). Was eligible for AP Calc but only one section offered and was a conflict. Numerous Honors classes including 5 years of French. I forget her scores on the SAT II for History and English but I think they were 740 and 780 respectively.

Already accepted in Honors program at Tulane with $24K.

Killer project for the DHS, at least I think so. Although from what I have read, I am not convinced the project matters that much. But I could be very wrong on that.

Fair amount of community service/school support type of activities, no sports. Has done piano since 2nd grade.

Appreciate your input. You are very kind to respond to all these anxious students, now you get a similar Dad.

I think she has a pretty good chance, but with so few scholarships offered (only like 100 I think) obviously it is impossible to say. Having said that, she seems to be pretty well qualified and I would not be surprised if she got it.

LOL fallenchemist- a parental "chance me" post!! How funny!

I do have to agree with you. IMO, the DHS gives the school an opportunity to cherry pick the students they really want, with the top stats and who bring something, and some passion to the school. She souldns like she 's got that, and certainly her being a legacy should help as well. So, short of her doing a project on the top 10 reasons why President Cowen shouldn't wear shorts when he walks his dog, I think she should keep her eye out for Mr. Fedex man in the next few days! Good luck! By the way, the letters in the DHS notification mentioned specific things in the students' application (not the project) that they really admired about the applicant. It was clearly personalized to the student, but focused on the whole student, not just the project.

Thanks for the kind thoughts Demonword. I guess at some point it has to get a bit arbitrary, at least in deciding between the last 200, 300 whatever. I can only hope. Worth a lot of money (especially with the investment funds tanking), and she has full ride offers other places. But getting the DHS could push her to Tulane. She certainly knows how much I loved it.

Thanks jym - Quick reply! Yeah, I know the parent thing was funny, but I am in Puerto Rico on business (toasty warm!!) and with all this time on my hands, was looking to see if anyone had been notified. Then it occurred to me to see what you thought, since you have gotten so involved in the whole thing. How is your S doing, btw? Happy with his choice? What dorm he in?

fallenchemist-
Does she have full ride offers (meaning room and board too) elsewhere? Thats great! Congrats!

As I said, if her application shows a passion as well as the excellent academic stats, I think you have a good chance of making that final cut. It is a great feeling, as you have already experienced with other awards. I recall being in your shoes just a year or so ago-- enjoy the ride!

She has a full tuition and about half the room/board at 2 other schools, would leave only about $5,000. But even though Tulane would be a little more, I think she might decide on it if she got the DHS. She has visited, and will go back for the Honors weekend in early March to experience it overnight and talk to professors, like she did the others.

One thing I noticed at Tulane is the Fees part of their tuition & fees is much higher than at other schools. I am assuming that the fees are not coverd by the DHS?

Will you share where the full ride offers are from? Who is Tulane competing with for your daughter?

No, DHS is tuition only. It will rise each year with any rise in tuition, but its "just" tuition (hey-- currently thats about $37K/yr-- nothing to sneeze at) and it would replace her current presidential ($24k) scholarhsip. The NMF will provide another $2k/yr (assuming she gets the Tulane sponsored NMF $ and not a corporate one) , leaving about $12k/yr in room, board ancillary health/exercise center fees, etc. Then throw in books and transportation. Its still a great deal.

My s chose not to live in the Honors dorm (Butler). He wanted the "true" freshman experience, so chose Monroe. Definitely a busy place!

I have heard from multiple people that they recieved no's in the mail today, but I didn't recieve anything. I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing. I'm still hopeful; this could make or break whether I will be able to attend Tulane. I would be heartbroken if I recieved a no.
